PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Zuses Steel (ranked 3930 p4p, 0 weight class) and DJ Shaw (ranked 5429 p4p, 583 weight class). DJ Shaw will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Zuses Steel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, DJ Shaw!
The judges for this bout are Santiago Holmes, Daniel Franklin and David Hoff.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Steel shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Shaw napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee asks Steel politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Steel prefers to stall for the moment though.
Shaw is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Check out the look on Steel's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!

Steel has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Shaw looks winded!

Excellent takedown into side control there by Steel.
Shaw seems a little lost for a moment, as Steel dominates the positioning.

Steel grinds an elbow into Shaw's temple.
The referee asks Steel politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Steel prefers to stall for the moment though.
Steel misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Steel tries to score with some ground and pound. Shaw controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
You can see the frustration on Shaw's face as Steel controls the position.

Steel tries for a kimura but Shaw is defending well.

Steel looks up at the clock and then as Shaw takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Steel smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Steel stands up and beckons Shaw to his feet.
Shaw takes one on the button.
Steel throws a sloppy head kick and Shaw moves out of range easily.

Steel gets a clinch.

Steel manages to break the clinch.

Steel drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Steel trying to control the action but Shaw is working from the bottom.

Steel is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Shaw is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Steel decides to stand back up. Steel steps back and let's Shaw get back to his feet.
Shaw's coach down at The Island Gym was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Shaw's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Shaw gets caught napping as Steel dives in and scores a takedown. Shaw manages to retain guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Steel looking to score a takedown here. Shaw is defending well but Steel drives through and ends up in Shaw's guard.
Steel is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Shaw gets tackled into the cage by Steel. Steel maintains the clinch.

Steel throws the kick towards the body but Shaw avoids it.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Steel scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.

Steel stands up and beckons Shaw to his feet.

Steel closes the distance and clinches.

Steel breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Steel closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Shaw on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Steel stalling.

Steel landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.

Steel escapes and gets back to his feet.

Steel looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Steel might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Steel stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Shaw steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Steel. That one must have hurt.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Shaw enables Steel to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Shaw manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Steel is looking to work some ground and pound but Shaw has wrist control.

Shaw is working an open guard so Steel takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Steel forces Shaw back against the cage and clinches.

Steel breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Shaw sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.

Steel has managed to clinch.
Steel leaning his opponent against the cage.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Shaw is fighting off a takedown attempt but Steel is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Shaw to the mat. Shaw regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Zuses Steel dominated that second round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. And we move into the final round!



Steel closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Steel wants to control but Shaw is keeping him busy.

Steel working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Steel knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Shaw on the ground.
Steel tries to move into full mount but can't pass Shaw's legs.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Steel decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Shaw takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Steel.

Steel stands up and beckons Shaw to his feet.

Steel fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Shaw sprawls well initially but Steel persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
DJ Shaw has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Steel takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Steel tries to pass to full mount but Shaw defends it.
Still in half guard, Steel seems content to control.

Steel stands up out of the half guard.

Steel pushes Shaw up against the cage in a clinch.

Steel successfully pulls guard.
Steel is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Shaw can do to turn this around?

The fighters are working up against the cage. Steel manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage.

Steel is trying to trip Shaw. He has hold of a leg but Shaw is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Steel persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Shaw is looking for a triangle but Steel pushes his legs off easily.
Steel has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Steel seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Steel is working Shaw over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
