PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Charles Briscoe (ranked 8214 p4p, 548 weight class) and Jake Smith (ranked 7718 p4p, 532 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Charles Briscoe!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jake Smith !
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, George Francis and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smith closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Smith thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Briscoe's head.
Smith is trying to control the action in half guard but Briscoe is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Smith looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Briscoe with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Briscoe moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but Briscoe is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Briscoe wants to stand but Smith is controlling the position.

Smith wants to pass the guard but Briscoe is keeping the position.
Smith is still trying to improve position.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Briscoe is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Smith shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Smith showed some decent athleticism there.

Briscoe kicks off Smith and gets to his feet.

Briscoe throws a right and a left that both miss.
Jake Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Briscoe has closed the distance and engaged Smith in a clinch.
Briscoe tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

Smith gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Briscoe regains guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Smith lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Briscoe throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Briscoe seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Briscoe is trying to keep Smith in close.

Smith has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Cozad MMA Las Vegas. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.
Briscoe is looking to work some ground and pound but Smith has wrist control.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Smith can do anything to dispel that myth.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Briscoe seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Smith wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Smith has momentary wrist control but Briscoe slips an elbow through the middle.

Let's hope that Smith has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Smith darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Briscoe regains full guard. Nicely done.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Briscoe is on top in guard.

Briscoe is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Smith can do to turn this around?
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Briscoe accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Smith wants to stand up but Briscoe is controlling him.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Briscoe tries to free his leg and advance position but Smith is retaining full guard.

Briscoe is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Smith is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Smith has escaped and now he's on top!

Briscoe has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Briscoe tries to sprawl but Smith drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Smith is working for a kimura but Briscoe is defending it quite comfortably.

Smith drops back, looking for a kneebar! Briscoe looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Briscoe looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Briscoe!

Briscoe misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Smith tries to bench press Briscoe off him but Briscoe keeps the position.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Briscoe throws a hook to the side of Smith 's head but Smith sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Briscoe throws a right and a left that Smith avoids nicely.

Briscoe gets caught flat footed, as Smith shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Briscoe wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Smith manages to pass to side control.

Smith not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Briscoe is trying to stand back up but Smith is controlling him

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Smith thows a huge punch but Briscoe dodges it nicely.
Briscoe is refusing to be controlled, as Smith sits in half guard.

Briscoe explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!

Smith closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Briscoe to the mat! Briscoe manages to get full guard.

Smith stands and throws Briscoe's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Smith wants to control his opponent's hands but Briscoe gets his hands free.

Smith is trying to get back to his feet but Briscoe has full control of the position and if anything, Smith has just worked his way into a worse spot.

Briscoe is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Smith knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Smith for a finish.

Well Briscoe has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
