PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Louie Dixon (ranked 25744 p4p, 0 weight class) and Zapi Zap (ranked 6699 p4p, 745 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Louie Dixon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Zapi Zap!
The judges for this bout are , Don Winkell and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Zap looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Zap trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Zap seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Dixon might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Dixon preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Zap stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Dixon swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Zap working some strikes from top position.
Zap wants to pass the guard but Dixon is keeping the position.
Zap looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Zap trying to control but Dixon is working from the bottom.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Zap looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Dixon!
Zap landing strikes.
Zap misses with the ground and pound.
Dixon is trying to escape the position but Zap is controlling the position.
Dixon is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Zap is controlling him well.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Zap wants to stand but Dixon has his arm trapped.
Dixon is not in a great position here, taking some shots.

Zap has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Dixon avoids the head kick by Zap.
Dixon tries to counter by clinching up but Zap breaks away and moves out of range.

Zap moves into the clinch.

Zap breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Zap gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Dixon to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Dixon won't allow Zap to get back to his feet.
Zap utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Dixon working some strikes from top position.

Dixon throwing strikes from guard but Zap blocks nicely.
Dixon won't allow Zap to get back to his feet.
Zap controls Dixon momentarily but Dixon frees himself.
Dixon could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Dixon distracts Zap with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Dixon working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Dixon throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Dixon postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Zapi Zap dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Nice sprawl there from Zap as Dixon shoots in.
Dixon throws a chopping leg kick but Zap manages to avoid taking any serious damage.

Zap fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Dixon sprawls well initially but Zap persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Zap not doing much here.

Dixon kicks off Zap and gets to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Zap drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Dixon throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!

Zap shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Zap was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Dixon tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Zap easily slips into full mount!
Zap can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Dixon is looking to escape.
Zap tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Dixon tries to hold on but Zap pushes him away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Zap lands a big shot there that rocks Dixon but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Zap lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Zap controlling from mount.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Zap avoids the attempt from Dixon to control.

Zap swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Dixon is now in Zap's guard. A big mistake from Zap there, giving up the dominant position!
Zap is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Dixon with a nice head shot there.
Zap is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Zap bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Dixon's guard.

Dixon utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Zap trying to control the position from guard on top but Dixon is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Dixon can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Zap controls the pace.

Zap is looking to work some ground and pound but Dixon has wrist control.
Zap slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Zap taking a breather here.
Zap throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Zap tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Zapi Zap will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Zapi Zap has got the better of the ground game so far.
Zap working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Dixon.
Zap avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Zap seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Dixon landing some decent shots from guard.
Dixon works over Zap with some ground and pound from guard.
Dixon is in close to Zap's body, working some short punches and elbows.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Dixon postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Zap looking for a sweep. Not yet Zap, not yet.

Zap looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Dixon missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Zap looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Zap not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Dixon attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.

Zap shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Zap takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Dixon is staying active underneath Zap, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Zap seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Zap thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Dixon's head.
Zap sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Dixon trying to hold on to Zap's head to control him but Zap postures up.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Zap not landing any meaningful shots this time.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Louie Dixon.
Well Zap has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
