PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between John Penn (ranked 6930 p4p, 520 weight class) and Ricky Stephenson (ranked 5551 p4p, 473 weight class). Stephenson has chosen Ricky Steamboat Theme Song as his entrance music. On his way into the cage it seems that John Penn has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily John Penn seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ricky Stephenson!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, George Francis and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Stephenson let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
Penn fails with the takedown
and Penn takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Stephenson misses with a hook

and Penn counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Penn wants to free his trapped foot but Stephenson is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Penn missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Penn content to control rather than advance.
Stephenson slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Stephenson seems keen to control Penn's posture.
Penn wants to pass the guard but Stephenson is keeping the position.

Penn sitting in guard here, content to control.
Penn throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Stephenson works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Penn working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Penn throws a big right hand that misses.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Penn pushing down on Stephenson's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Penn throwing shots but Stephenson is blocking nicely.

Penn is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Stephenson defends it well.

Penn is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Stephenson looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Penn thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Stephenson's head.
Penn wants to control but Stephenson is keeping him busy.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

and Stephenson counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Stephenson dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Penn fails with the takedown.
Stephenson cracks Penn with a right hand to the side of the head.

Penn shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Penn was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Penn creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Stephenson sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Stephenson tries to buck Penn off but Penn is having none of it.
Penn tries to advance to mount but can't.
Stephenson is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Penn wants to control but Stephenson is keeping him busy.

Penn tries to score with some ground and pound. Stephenson controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Stephenson wants to control but Penn postures up.
Stephenson tries to buck Penn off but Penn is having none of it.
Stephenson seems a little lost for a moment, as Penn dominates the positioning.
Stephenson is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Penn wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Stephenson, who protects the arm well.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Penn tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Penn has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that John Penn will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Penn ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Penn throws a poor cross that misses
and Stephenson connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
The fighters circling - Penn throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Stephenson has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Penn.
Penn sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Stephenson is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Penn is looking to take a break and control but Stephenson is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Penn is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Stephenson knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Penn is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Stephenson can do to turn this around?
Penn advances to mount.
Stephenson tries to hold on but Penn pushes him away.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Stephenson gets back to half guard.
Penn trying to control from half guard but Stephenson is working away.
Penn passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Stephenson!

Stephenson is wriggling around trying to escape.

Penn unloads with some shots from mount but Stephenson bucks and avoids them well.
Penn prevents Stephenson from getting the reversal.
Penn tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Penn can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Stephenson is looking to escape.

Stephenson tries to buck Penn off but he can't manage it.
Stephenson is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Stephenson tries to hold on but Penn pushes him away.

Penn is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Stephenson has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Stephenson!

Stephenson tries to pass to full mount but Penn defends it.
Stephenson is trying to control the action in half guard but Penn is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Penn is rocked!
Penn on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Oh Penn is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Stephenson drops Penn with a naaaaasty hook - Penn is in real trouble here! Stephenson dives in to side control and pounds out his opponent for a TKO victory! The crowd goes nuts!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:21 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Ricky Stephenson!
A relieved looking Ricky Stephenson thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
