PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jean Pierre Papin (ranked 2044 p4p, 290 weight class) and Steve Staunton (ranked 1956 p4p, 274 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jean Pierre Papin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Steve Staunton!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Alexandre Firmino and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Papin throws a lazy uppercut
and Papin takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Papin clinches with his opponent.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Staunton.
Staunton can't find room to land a body shot as Papin controls the action.
Papin leaning his opponent against the cage.
Staunton tries to throw a body punch but Papin avoids it by throwing Staunton back against the cage.

Staunton breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Papin sizes up Staunton with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Papin bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Staunton misses the shot to the body.
It looked like Papin wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Papin takes the fight into the clinch.
Staunton doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
A battle for position here, against the cage.
Staunton misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Papin.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Staunton blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Papin misses with a hook to the ribs.
The referee calls for Papin to work.
Staunton is trying to stall.
Papin misses with some punches.
Staunton pushes Papin back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Papin tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Staunton lands a body punch.

Papin breaks the clinch.
Staunton connects with a solid leg kick.
Papin keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Staunton walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Papin checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Staunton throws a big shot that misses.
Staunton misses with an uppercut. Papin saw that one coming.
An attempted straight right counter from Papin misses the target.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Staunton scores with a body shot.
Papin closes the distance looking to clinch
and Staunton counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Papin is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Papin tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Staunton paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Staunton throws a body punch but Papin moves out of range.
A looping hook to the body misses from Staunton. Papin does a little dance to reset his feet.
Papin misses with a jab, cross combination.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Papin slips a jab from Staunton.
Staunton cracks the inside of Papin's front leg.
Papin lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Staunton circles away quickly and effectively.

Staunton lands the left hand.
Staunton fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Papin.
Staunton scores with a jab to the body.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Staunton throws a jab when Papin was well out of range.
Staunton moves into range and connects with a jab.


Papin is rocked!
A punch lands to the side of Papin 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Oh Papin is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Papin has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Staunton.
Papin walks straight into a right hand from Staunton - that's dropped him! Staunton jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Papin from any more punishment! Papin complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:18 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Steve Staunton!
