PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Micheal King (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and mauricio rua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Micheal King!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, mauricio rua!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Donatello Bradman and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
King misses with a low kick.
King moves in looking to clinch but rua pushes him off.

King pushes rua up against the cage in a clinch.
King wants to break free but rua has control.
rua using the Thai clinch to land knees to the body.
rua's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

rua jumps into guard, dragging King to the mat.
rua managing to control the position.
rua being controlled here, momentarily.
King throws a strike but rua rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

rua is stalling in the full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

King scrambles and gets back to his feet.
rua looks gassed!

King drives through and clinches with rua against the cage.

rua breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
rua fails with a takedown attempt.
rua looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
The crowd cheers as King lands an impressive looking overhand right. rua doesn't seem phased though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
King tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
King fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
King could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

King has closed the distance and engaged rua in a clinch.
rua has had enough of the clinch but King keeps him there for the moment.

King escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

King drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

King decides to take the fight back to the feet.
King throws a series of punches but rua avoids them all with ease.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
King buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

King closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - King lands in his opponent's guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Micheal King dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



King decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
rua wants to control but King is keeping busy and won't allow it.
King controlling the pace.
rua is trying to maintain the position but King is very close to passing his half guard.
rua is looking for a sweep. King is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
rua is breathing heavily.

King looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks rua with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
rua keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

King decides to stand and escape the position.
King tries to clinch there but rua circles away.
King looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

King closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - King lands in his opponent's guard.
King wants to control from the top but rua keeps moving.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

King drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and King jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

rua wriggles free and stands up.
Nice takedown defense from rua. No joy for King on that attempt.
mauricio rua seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
King slips a jab from rua.
King tries to clinch but rua is having none of it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
rua has his takedown stuffed

and King counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by King.
rua blocking some punches.
rua tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
King tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. rua smiles and moves away.
King tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but rua swivels and escapes.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Micheal King. That's going to take a lot out of him.
King lands with a right hand.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
rua misses with a takedown attempt
and King counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
King closes the distance and lands a one-two.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Micheal King dominated that second round.
That's time! Back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

King thuds his right hand into rua's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
King is looking to clinch.
rua misses with a kick to the body

and King counters with a single leg into guard. rua didn't expect that.
King postures up.
rua wants to sweep here but King controlling him for the moment.

King gets to his feet. rua looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

King has closed the distance and engaged rua in a clinch.
King wants to break the clinch but can't.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
rua blocks an uppercut.

rua breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

King forces rua back against the cage and clinches.

King pulls guard successfully.
rua trying to control but King is working from the bottom.
King wants to sweep here but rua controlling him for the moment.
rua throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
rua throws and elbow that misses. King uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in rua's guard. Nice move by King!

King working some strikes from top position.
rua not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
King chips away with some ground and pound.

rua controls King momentarily but King frees himself.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells King's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
rua keeping moving, preventing King from controlling successfully.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
King shoots for a double leg takedown but rua sprawls well. He's pushed King's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
King misses with a low kick.

and King counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.

King drives through with a takedown into guard.
mauricio rua has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Micheal King is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
King tries to stand but rua is controlling from the bottom.

And that's the end of the fight!
Micheal King showed his dominance in that final round.
Well King has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
