PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Howard McCormick (ranked 5054 p4p, 434 weight class) and Tyler Kortez (ranked 8260 p4p, 532 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Tyler Kortez was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Howard McCormick!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tyler Kortez!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, John Roberts and Dean Styles.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McCormick throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Kortez's waist but Kortez gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing McCormick off to one side.

McCormick looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Kortez!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kortez is being controlled here.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McCormick has knee on belly momentarily but Kortez bucks him off and regains half guard.

McCormick is looking for a kimura but Kortez is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for McCormick to get the leverage.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kortez on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
McCormick takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
McCormick definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
McCormick seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Kortez for as long as he can get away with.
McCormick takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Kortez felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

McCormick is figuring out what he wants to do next.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
McCormick will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Kortez dives in and grabs McCormick's left leg, looking for a takedown. McCormick pushes down on Kortez's head and hops out.

It looked like McCormick was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Howard McCormick seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
McCormick wants to break the clinch but can't.

McCormick seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

McCormick drops back, looking for a kneebar! Kortez looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Kortez looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Kortez!

McCormick wants to control but Kortez postures up.
Kortez tries to get to his feet but McCormick is in the middle of advancing position himself and ends up with Kortez in his guard.

McCormick is pulling down on Kortez's head. It's preventing any offense from Kortez, at least for the moment.

Tyler Kortez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
