PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Palmer Goodman (ranked 24937 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mateo Vasquez (ranked 6309 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Palmer Goodman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mateo Vasquez!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Jack Bonds and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Goodman clinches.

Vasquez pulls guard effortlessly.

Goodman postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Goodman will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Vasquez is striking from the bottom but he's now found himself mounted! Oh dear - not enough focus on defense there.

Goodman sneaks back into half guard.
Goodman has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Vasquez content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Goodman wants to get back to his feet.
Goodman slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Goodman wants to sweep here but Vasquez controlling him for the moment.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Vasquez must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Goodman shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Vasquez as he jumps to the side.
Goodman tries to clinch but Vasquez moves out of range.
Goodman tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Vasquez defends well and Goodman ends up having to push Vasquez into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Goodman really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Vasquez moves into the clinch successfully.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Palmer Goodman dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Vasquez shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Vasquez was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Goodman manages to get back to half guard.

Vasquez wants to stand up but Goodman manages to regain full guard.

Goodman has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Vasquez can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Goodman is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Vasquez is working an open guard so Goodman takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Goodman lands a nice shot to the body.

Goodman gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Goodman creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Goodman lands a shoulder strike.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Goodman misses with a punch on the inside.

Vasquez has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Goodman regains guard immediately.

Goodman pushes Vasquez off and gets back to his feet.

Vasquez is looking to regain half guard here but Goodman keeps moving and retains side control.

Goodman swings around for an armbar but Vasquez sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Goodman's guard.

Vasquez is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Vasquez gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Goodman wants to sweep here but Vasquez controlling him for the moment.

Goodman is looking for a triangle but Vasquez pushes his legs off easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Vasquez controls from within his opponent's guard.
Vasquez throws a strike but Goodman rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Goodman is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Vasquez can do to turn this around?

Goodman not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Goodman gets to his feet - Vasquez follows without any prompting.
Vasquez fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Goodman blocks a head kick by Vasquez.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Goodman enables Vasquez to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Goodman manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Goodman pushes Vasquez off and scrambles back to his feet.
Vasquez takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The fight moves into the clinch position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Goodman gets control of Vasquez's arms and successfully pulls guard. Goodman will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Goodman wants to sweep here but Vasquez controlling him for the moment.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Goodman is on top in guard.

Goodman is looking to stand up but Vasquez won't let him.

Vasquez is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Goodman content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Goodman lands a couple of elbows.
Goodman lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Goodman stands up and waves to Vasquez to follow him.

Goodman moves into the clinch.
Goodman just leaning against Vasquez, taking a breather.
Goodman will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Vasquez up against the cage.

Goodman is fighting off a takedown attempt but Vasquez is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Goodman to the mat. Goodman regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Mateo Vasquez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Palmer Goodman is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Goodman tries to land a sweep but no joy.

And that's the end of the fight!
Palmer Goodman showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Goodman, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
