PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alfred Carver (ranked 25502 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matt Stonie (ranked 6354 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Alfred Carver!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Matt Stonie!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Alec Ball and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carver shoots for a takedown but Stonie saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Stonie has Carver up against the cage in a clinch.

Stonie breaks the clinch.
Carver staying out of range there.
Stonie tries to land a body kick

and Carver counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Stonie is pulling down on Carver's head to control his posture.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Carver has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Stonie is proving hard to escape from.
Carver might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Carver got a little sloppy there for a moment and Stonie has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Carver has managed to get both his arms back between Stonie's legs - danger averted.
Stonie is trying to control the position but Carver postures up.
Carver would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Stonie is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Stonie pulls Carver in to control the position.

Stonie escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Carver gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Stonie throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Stonie wants to stand up but Carver is controlling him.
Carver is looking to stand up but Stonie won't let him.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Carver trying to control but Stonie is working from the bottom.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Stonie misses with a takedown attempt
enabling Carver to counter with a crisp jab.

Carver looking to score a takedown here. Stonie is defending well but Carver drives through and ends up in Stonie's guard.
Stonie can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Carver controls the pace.
Stonie pulls Carver in to control the position.
Carver stopping the sweep attempt from Stonie.
Carver trying to control but Stonie is working from the bottom.

Carver is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Stonie is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Stonie pulls Carver in close to his closed guard and prevents Carver from doing any damage or advancing position.
Carver controlling from the top position.
Carver won't allow Stonie to sweep him here.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Stonie shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Carver manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Carver looking for a guillotine here but Stonie defends easily.
Stonie wants to stand but Carver is controlling his posture from full guard.
Carver is trying to keep Stonie in close.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Stonie tries to stand but Carver is controlling from the bottom.
Stonie prevents Carver from getting back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Matt Stonie will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Stonie with a lazy takedown attempt

and Carver counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Carver.
Carver tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Stonie smiles and moves away.

Stonie fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Carver, pushing him back against the cage.

Stonie successfully pulls guard.
Stonie pulls Carver in close to prevent any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Stonie holds on and takes a little breather.
Stonie being controlled here, momentarily.
Stonie looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Stonie keeps trying to improve his position.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Stonie not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Carver uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Stonie.
Carver fails with a takedown attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Stonie tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Carver defends well and Stonie ends up having to push Carver into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Carver keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Alfred Carver has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Matt Stonie.
Stonie rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Carver moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Stonie tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Carver was well out of range. Poor timing from Stonie.
Stonie will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Stonie is breathing heavily.
Carver will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
And Stonie tries to counter it with a takedown but Carver pushes his down on his head and steps out.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Carver dives in and grabs Stonie's left leg, looking for a takedown. Stonie pushes down on Carver's head and hops out.
Matt Stonie seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Stonie closes the distance and clinches.
Stonie tries to pull guard but Carver won't allow it.
Carver managing to block the knees to the body from Stonie.
Stonie working hard to break the clinch.

Stonie's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Stonie fails with a takedown attempt.
Carver is trying hard to land a takedown here. Stonie sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Carver throws an off balance right hand

and Stonie counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Carver manages to escape and get back to his feet!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Stonie moves into the clinch successfully.

Carver manages to break the clinch.
Stonie goes for a double leg but Carver avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Carver continues to drive forward.

Carver drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Carver could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Matt Stonie will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!



Stonie darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Carver tries to roll over but Stonie keeps him under control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Carver has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Stonie is working away from the top position though.
Stonie prevents Carver from standing back up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Stonie is looking to take a break and control but Carver is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Carver tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Stonie manages to move to mount!
Stonie can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Carver is looking to escape.
Stonie is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Stonie is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Carver can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Carver holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Stonie tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Stonie is landing with some decent strikes but Carver is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Stonie tries to control but Carver wriggling away.
Carver reaches up to try and control the position but Stonie seems to have an arm triangle now! Uh oh! Carver rolls and tries to escape and now Stonie has his back!

Stonie is working for the choke. He's slipped one arm under the chin. Carver has to defend the other arm for all he's worth... but Stonie has managed to get that arm free too and he's tightening the choke! Carver taps out and looks absolutely disgusted with himself. Stonie doesn't care though - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:56 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Matt Stonie!
