PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Dean Malenko (ranked 24908 p4p, 0 weight class) and George Stone (ranked 6390 p4p, 0 weight class). Malenko comes into the arena with Shooter blaring out of the sound system. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 8 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Dean Malenko!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, George Stone!
The judges for this bout are Dirk Anderson, David Hoff and Santiago Holmes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Stone showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Malenko.
We've been hearing reports that Malenko has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Stone pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Malenko shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Stone but Stone pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Stone closes the distance and clinches.
Stone wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Stone wants to take the fight to the mat but Malenko manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Stone trying to control the position but instead, Malenko has worked for underhooks and has pushed Stone into the cage.

Malenko ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Malenko no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Stone is looking to advance position but Malenko has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Stone holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Malenko tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Malenko misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Malenko can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Stone is looking to escape.
Malenko misses with a head shot.
Malenko tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Malenko could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Stone wants to hold on but Malenko pushes him away.
Malenko takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Stone is trying to escape the mount.
Stone keeps trying to improve his position.
Malenko content just to control the position here.
Malenko trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Stone can't escape the position.

Malenko is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Stone has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Stone!

Stone stands up and waves to Malenko to follow him.
Malenko darts in trying to clinch

and Stone counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Malenko!
Malenko tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Stone presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

Stone stands up from mount. Strange move.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Malenko misses with a takedown attempt - Stone sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Dean Malenko will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Stone changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Malenko tries to avoid it but Stone manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Malenko to the ground. Malenko escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Stone shoots for a double leg takedown but Malenko sprawls well. He's pushed Stone's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Malenko wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Stone throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Malenko's waist but Malenko gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Stone off to one side.
Dean Malenko has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of George Stone.

Stone misses with a lunging right hand

and Malenko counters by moving into the clinch.
Stone content to slow the pace in the clinch.

Stone breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Malenko looks for a takedown but Stone sprawls well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Malenko tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Stone paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Stone darts in looking for a takedown but Malenko gets double underhooks and turns Stone into the cage.
Stone pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Stone is breathing heavily.

Stone goes for a double leg but Malenko avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Malenko continues to drive forward.
Malenko misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Malenko pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Stone digs a good body shot into Malenko's ribs.

Malenko takes the fight into the clinch.
Malenko wants a takedown.

Stone escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Stone gets tackled into the cage by Malenko. Malenko maintains the clinch.

Malenko breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Malenko enables Stone to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Malenko manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Malenko has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Stone is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Malenko keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Stone's efforts to push away.
Stone tries for a takedown. No joy.

Malenko's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Stone takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.

Stone gets tackled into the cage by Malenko. Malenko maintains the clinch.
Malenko lands a right hand.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Malenko manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Malenko scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Malenko wants to clinch.
Malenko darts in looking for a takedown but Stone gets double underhooks and turns Malenko into the cage.
Malenko is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Stone can do to turn this around?
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Stone is defended easily by Malenko.
Malenko shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Stone sprawls well. Stone wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Malenko gets slowly back to his feet.

Stone defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Malenko.
Malenko connects with an inside leg kick.
Malenko closes the distance and clinches up with Stone, looking for a takedown. Malenko pushes Stone against the cage but Stone circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Dean Malenko is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Malenko slaps away a takedown attempt from Stone, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Malenko keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Horrible takedown attempt by Malenko or perhaps it was just good defense by Stone, which made it look bad.
Malenko tries to clinch up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! And we move into the final round!



Stone dives in and scores a takedown into Malenko's guard.

Malenko has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Stone has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
Stone wants a takedown but no success here.

Malenko manages to break the clinch.

Malenko moves into the clinch.
Malenko changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Stone fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Malenko goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Stone takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Stone looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Stone fails to land the takedown.
Dean Malenko has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of George Stone.
Malenko throws a head kick that misses.

Malenko fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Stone to the ground. Malenko is now in Stone's guard.
Malenko working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Stone working a defensive guard but Malenko manages to pass into side control anyway.

Malenko working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Stone is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Malenko sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Stone is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Stone tries to improve position but can't.
Malenko has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Malenko takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Malenko looking to secure an arm triangle but Stone defends it well.
Malenko wants to control the pace but Stone is squirming around nicely.
Malenko thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Malenko prevents Stone from getting the reversal.

Malenko is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Stone is surviving well by controlling Malenko's body position as best he can.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Stone slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
The fighters are battling for position here. Stone manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Stone striking off his back but it's not causing Malenko any problems.
Stone wants to stand but Malenko is controlling the position.

Stone has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Malenko can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Malenko is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

And that's the end of the fight!
Dean Malenko showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Malenko has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
