PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Kunta Kinte (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Yoki Kurinoshi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the ring.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Kunta Kinte!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Yoki Kurinoshi!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Sosuke Kotani and Tatsuya Matsuyama.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kinte changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Kurinoshi looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Kurinoshi tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Kinte wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Kinte tries to advance to mount but can't.
Kurinoshi is trying to improve his position.
Kinte in side control lands a decent elbow.
Kinte trying to control the action but Kurinoshi is working from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Kinte is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Kurinoshi knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Kurinoshi tries to bench press Kinte off him but Kinte keeps the position.
Kinte in side control, just content to control the action for now.

Kinte is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Kurinoshi is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Kinte's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Kinte is trying to get an arm triangle but Kurinoshi is defending well.
Kurinoshi tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Kinte wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kinte controlling the position from side mount.
Kinte has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Kinte wants to control but Kurinoshi is keeping him busy.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Kunta Kinte just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Kinte looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Kurinoshi is fending him off so far but Kinte persists. Nope, Kurinoshi circles away and we're back to standing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Nice sprawl there from Kurinoshi as Kinte shoots in.

Kinte feints and as Kurinoshi raises his hands in defense, Kinte changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Kinte's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Kurinoshi is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Kurinoshi wants to stand but Kinte is controlling the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Kinte controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Kinte pushes down on Kurinoshi's leg and manages to get into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kunta Kinte dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Kinte changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Kurinoshi tries to avoid it but Kinte manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Kurinoshi to the ground. Kurinoshi escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Kurinoshi moves in looking to clinch but Kinte pushes him off.
Kurinoshi throws a hook but Kinte blocks it.
Kinte shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Kurinoshi as he avoids it easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kurinoshi looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Kinte moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kinte controlling the position.
Kinte is trying to keep Kurinoshi in close.
Kinte pulls Kurinoshi in close to his closed guard and prevents Kurinoshi from doing any damage or advancing position.
Kinte really is built like a bowling ball. I wonder if he'd roll if you pushed him down a hill...

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Kurinoshi trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Kinte pushes a forearm under Kurinoshi's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Kurinoshi is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:43 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Kunta Kinte!
Kunta Kinte retains his lightweight title!
