Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Marcelo Rios (ranked 7612 p4p, 0 weight class) and Stephen Gardner (ranked 6071 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

The judges for this bout are James Glass, Richard Clark and Colin Fotheringham.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gardner dives in and grabs Rios's left leg, looking for a takedown. Rios pushes down on Gardner's head and hops out.
Rios misses with a kick to the body.
Gardner tries a quick counter leg kick but Rios is wise to it.
Rios clinches up with Gardner and pushes him back against the cage.
Gardner lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.

Rios has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Gardner after a bit of a struggle.
Rios tries to score a body lock takedown but Gardner shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Gardner has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Rios avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Gardner pushes Rios back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Rios gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Gardner.
Marcelo Rios has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Stephen Gardner.
Gardner is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Rios is defending well.

Rios lands a hook that snaps the head of Gardner backwards.
Gardner is trying to break the clinch but Rios is controlling him.
Gardner has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Rios is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Rios tries to pull guard but Gardner won't allow it.

Gardner tries to pull guard but Rios forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Gardner ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Gardner no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Gardner has momentary wrist control but Rios slips an elbow through the middle.
Gardner working for a triangle but Rios defends it easily.
Rios lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Rios missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Rios wants to control from the top but Gardner keeps moving.
Rios has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Rios pushing down on Gardner's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Gardner makes his way to full guard, as Rios worked for a kimura.
Rios knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Gardner on the ground.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Rios is looking to pass into half guard but Gardner pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Gardner is in guard.
Gardner content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Rios has locked up a guillotine! Rios's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Gardner is holding on here and Rios must be using up a lot of energy. Gardner has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Rios gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!
