PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Ricardo Alvarez (ranked 2321 p4p, 232 weight class) and Alexander Suchy (ranked 23231 p4p, 568 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ricardo Alvarez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Alexander Suchy!
The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Josh West and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Suchy displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Alvarez.
Ricardo Alvarez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Alvarez steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Suchy. That one must have hurt.
Alvarez shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Suchy pinned against the cage. Suchy gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Suchy only half commits to the counter leg kick.

Alvarez gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Suchy blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Suchy content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Suchy can't find room to land a body shot as Alvarez controls the action.

Alvarez has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Suchy is trying to keep an underhook but Alvarez manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Alvarez stands and throws Suchy's legs to the side, diving into side control.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Suchy struggling a bit here.

Alvarez is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Suchy knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Suchy felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Alvarez thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Alvarez goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Suchy has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Alvarez but great work by Suchy.

Suchy is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Alvarez's shoulder. That is not cool.
Alvarez tries to buck Suchy off but Suchy is having none of it.
The referee asks Suchy politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Suchy prefers to stall for the moment though.

Alvarez is not content to let Suchy control the position.
Alvarez is looking for a sweep.

Suchy is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Alvarez knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Alvarez tries to buck Suchy off but Suchy is having none of it.
The referee asks Suchy politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Suchy prefers to stall for the moment though.

Suchy tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Suchy has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Alvarez seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Alvarez is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Ricardo Alvarez decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
