PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Carlton Lassiter (ranked 1308 p4p, 160 weight class) and Squanchy Squanch (ranked 3218 p4p, 351 weight class). Squanchy Squanch will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Carlton Lassiter!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Squanchy Squanch!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Frank Dennis and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Good leg kick by Lassiter there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Lassiter throws a leg kick but Squanch checks it.
Lassiter swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Squanch replies with a solid counter kick to the body but Lassiter blocks it well.
Lassiter rushes in with a sloppy looking punch

and Squanch counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
An uppercut to the body lands inside from Squanch.
Lassiter tries to pull guard but Squanch forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Nice body punch from Squanch.
A nice left hand lands by Squanch.
Squanch lands an elbow that stopped Lassiter in his tracks for a moment.
Squanch stops a takedown attempt from Lassiter.
Squanch scores with a nice hook to the head.
Lassiter is trying to pull guard but Squanch turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carlton Lassiter. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Squanch lands a nice elbow.
Squanch stalls.

Squanch throws an elbow that misses.
Squanch gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.

Squanch is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

Lassiter tries to land a sweep but no joy.
We've been hearing good reports from Lassiter's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Squanch seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Squanch gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Lassiter to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Lassiter stays in close to Squanch's body and controls the position.
Lassiter is looking to work some ground and pound but Squanch has wrist control.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Lassiter controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Lassiter throwing strikes but missing.
Squanch working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Lassiter.
Lassiter trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Lassiter postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Lassiter wants to pass the guard but Squanch is keeping the position.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Lassiter drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Lassiter jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Squanchy Squanch will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Squanch keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Lassiter looks to score with a jab to the body but Squanch is just out of range.
A nice side step and Squanch releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.

Lassiter changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Squanch looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Lassiter is trying to ground and pound but Squanch uses the momentary lack of control by Lassiter to regain half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Lassiter connects with a nice short shot to Squanch's temple.
Lassiter is trying to control. Squanch wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Squanch won't allow Lassiter to pass to mount.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Squanch really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Lassiter. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Lassiter seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Lassiter is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Squanch has managed to free his arm - good work.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Lassiter takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Lassiter thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Squanch's head.

Carlton Lassiter overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Lassiter in particular looking to stall.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

and Squanch counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Squanch.

Lassiter jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Squanch walks away with a smile on his face. Lassiter gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Lassiter manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Squanch on his heels. He'll look to pass Squanch's guard now, I'm sure.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Lassiter bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Squanch's guard.

Squanch is pulling down on Lassiter's head. It's preventing any offense from Lassiter, at least for the moment.
Lassiter stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Squanch swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Lassiter in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
Lassiter grinds an elbow into Squanch's temple.
Lassiter wants to lay and pray for a moment but Squanch keeps working.
Squanch is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
Squanch parries the strikes from Lassiter easily there. Lassiter is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Squanch to escape.
Lassiter is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Squanch can do to turn this around?
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Lassiter has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Lassiter is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Squanch.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Lassiter shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Squanch as he jumps to the side.
Squanch flicks out a counter leg kick but Lassiter steps away.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that's the end of the fight!
Carlton Lassiter showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Lassiter has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
