PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between James Martin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Roman Gozalez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gozalez comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Holla If Ya Hear Me kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, James Martin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Roman Gozalez!
The judges for this bout are , Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Martin gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Martin gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Gozalez.
Martin wants to break the clinch but can't.
Gozalez gets underhooks to prevent Martin's takedown attempt.

Martin pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Gozalez closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Gozalez lands in his opponent's guard.

Martin is working an open guard so Gozalez takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Gozalez fails with a takedown attempt.
Nice takedown defense from Gozalez. No joy for Martin on that attempt.
No luck for Martin with that takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James Martin. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Martin jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Gozalez walks away with a smile on his face. Martin gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Gozalez breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Martin shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Gozalez's guard.
Gozalez is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Martin dives into side control.

Martin is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Gozalez is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Martin wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gozalez keeps working.

Martin working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Gozalez is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Martin has just dragged him back down to the mat.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gozalez can't do much from the bottom here.
Martin wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gozalez keeps working.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Gozalez tries to escape but Martin is in control.
Martin remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Gozalez bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
Gozalez looks gassed!

Martin shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Martin was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Gozalez wants to control but Martin is having none of it.

Martin with a couple of short strikes.
Martin is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Gozalez is wriggling around trying to escape.
Gozalez really wants to buck Martin off and get back to his feet.
Martin lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Gozalez keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Martin lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Martin wants to control the pace but Gozalez is squirming around nicely.
Gozalez working to try and regain half guard.
Martin takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Gozalez throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
BOOM! Martin connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Martin is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Gozalez can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Martin has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Martin get's back to his feet.

Martin gets the takedown into side control.
Martin lands a nice forearm strike.
Martin lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Gozalez down.
Martin slows the pace down.
Gozalez is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Martin in side control lands a decent elbow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Martin dominated that round.

Martin throws a series of punches but Gozalez moves out of range.
Gozalez closes the distance but Martin moves to the side

and Martin counters with a nice double leg into side control. Gozalez won't be happy with that.
Gozalez is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Gozalez wants to get back to full guard.

Martin is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Gozalez doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Martin.

Gozalez pushes Martin off looking to stand but Martin dives back in and keeps control.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Martin lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.

Martin is fighting off a takedown attempt but Gozalez is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Martin to the mat. Martin regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Gozalez gets to his feet. Martin looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Martin decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Gozalez is looking for a sweep. Martin is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The fighters are battling for position here. Gozalez manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Martin thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Gozalez is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Martin tries to free his leg and advance position but Gozalez is retaining full guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Gozalez can do anything to dispel that myth.
Gozalez wants to get back to his feet but Martin is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Gozalez takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Gozalez looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.

Martin throws a leg kick which misses Gozalez's front leg but catches the back leg as Gozalez tries to avoid it.
Martin goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

James Martin overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Gozalez is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Martin is controlling him well.

Martin thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Gozalez connects with a nice looking jab.
Gozalez dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Martin. That did some damage!
No luck for Gozalez with that takedown attempt.
Martin shoots in and drives through. Gozalez sprawls well.
Gozalez shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Martin pinned against the cage. Martin gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Gozalez tries to keep at a distance but Martin has taken the fight into the clinch.

Gozalez's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

James Martin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Roman Gozalez.
Gozalez is looking to stand up but Martin isn't so interested in that idea.
Martin is looking to work some ground and pound but Gozalez has wrist control.

Martin drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Gozalez manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Martin has Gozalez in his guard.

Martin is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Gozalez is looking to stand up but Martin won't let him.
Martin is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Martin looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Gozalez with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Gozalez is looking to get back to is feet but Martin passes into side control.
Martin takes a little break here. Gozalez wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.

James Martin showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Martin, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
