The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cruz drives through with a takedown into Vargas's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Cruz looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Cruz wants to control from the top but Vargas keeps moving.
Cruz throws a strike but Vargas rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Vargas will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Vargas passes Cruz's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Vargas lands strikes from half guard.
Vargas working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Vargas decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Vargas closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Cruz quickly recovers to half guard.
Cruz pushes Vargas off but Vargas dives into side control.
Vargas really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cruz takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.

Vargas is working Cruz over with some ground and pound from side control.
Vargas is putting a hurting on Cruz here, landing some big shots from side control.

Cruz tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Vargas looks up at the clock and then as Cruz takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Vargas smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Cruz is rocked!

Vargas tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Vargas has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Vargas scores with a couple of short elbows.
Cruz is still in real trouble! Can Vargas finish him?

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cruz takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Vargas cracks Cruz with an elbow. That is naaassty.

Vargas stands up.

Vargas dives in and scores a takedown into Cruz's guard.
Cruz is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Vargas dives into side control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Cruz tries to control but Vargas manages to take his back.
Vargas is looking to finish with some ground and pound!

Vargas has got one arm under Cruz's chin. This could be trouble... Cruz trying to control the other hand but Vargas gets it free and sqeezes tight - just a matter of time now! Yep, Cruz has tapped out! The fight is over!
