PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Xavier Kane (ranked 6156 p4p, 0 weight class) and Derrick Jones (ranked 5440 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Xavier Kane!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Derrick Jones!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Eddie Farnsworth and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones leaves Kane with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Kane tries for a takedown but Jones circles away easily
and Jones counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Kane lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Jones backs up against the cage.

Kane gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Kane misses with a punch on the inside.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jones digs a right hand into Kane's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Kane's gas tank.
Jones wants to break free but Kane has control.
Kane avoiding damage as Jones throws knees to the body.
Kane managing to block the knees to the body from Jones.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Jones lands a hook to the side of the head.
Jones digs a right hand underneath Kane's ribcage. Kane let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Jones tries for a takedown but Kane manages to get underhooks.
Kane has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Jones after a bit of a struggle.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Xavier Kane. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Jones tries to circle away but Kane has him pinned against the cage.
Jones has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Kane avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Jones is pressed up against the cage. Kane has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Jones down to the mat. Jones avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Kane darts in and clinches Jones up against the cage.
Kane drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The referee is keeping an eye on Jones - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

Jones has hold of one of Kane's legs. Kane is fighting the takedown attempt but Jones gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Kane knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Jones on the ground.
Jones slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Jones is looking to work some ground and pound but Kane has wrist control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Jones trying to control but Kane is working from the bottom.
Kane controls Jones momentarily but Jones frees himself.
Jones connects with a couple of short punches.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jones slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Jones's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Kane is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Jones pushing down on Kane's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Kane tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Jones has advanced to mount. Uh oh.

Jones is working for a guillotine from mount but Kane frees his head quite easily.
Jones thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Derrick Jones dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Kane.
Jones is looking for the big counter here.
Jones clobbers Kane with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Kane tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Jones swivels and escapes.
Jones throws a counter combo.
Kane shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Jones counters with a two punch combo.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Xavier Kane. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Kane closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Jones throws Kane to one side and escapes!
Kane really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Kane loads up on a big right hand but Jones slips the punch.
Kane fails with the takedown
and Jones counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Kane tries for a takedown but Jones sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Kane throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Jones counters with a single leg into guard. Kane didn't expect that.
Kane is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Jones dives into side control.

Jones has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Jones happy to just control the position for now.

Jones blocks a jab.
Jones is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Kane shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Jones as he jumps to the side.
Jones wants to counter with a clinch but Kane pushes him away.
Jones lands with a good body shot.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Kane is looking to stand back up but Jones counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Kane.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jones keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Jones thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Kane's head.
Jones winds up and cracks Kane with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Derrick Jones has got the better of the ground game so far.
Jones frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Jones throwing strikes here but Kane is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.

Kane holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Jones tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.

Kane is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Derrick Jones showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Xavier Kane seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Jones stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Jones wants it to stay on the feet.

Jones pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Kane back to the cage. Jones follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Jones closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Jones lands in his opponent's guard.

Kane is working an open guard so Jones takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Jones fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Kane throws a big counter combination but Jones scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Jones shoots in for a takedown but Kane shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Kane throws a shot from downtown. Jones moves away and avoids it.

and Jones counters with a three punch combo that has Kane backing up. Kane nods at Jones to acknowledge the strikes.
Jones scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Kane doesn't seem bothered though.

and Jones counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Jones slows the pace down in half guard.
Kane is looking to control Jones's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Kane avoid being mounted?

Jones decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Kane doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Jones counters with a stiff right hand.
Xavier Kane has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Derrick Jones is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Jones dives in and scores a takedown into Kane's guard.

Derrick Jones comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Jones has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
