PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Pat Verbeek (ranked 208 p4p, 31 weight class) and Harold Shipman (ranked 1497 p4p, 176 weight class). Shipman has chosen Amazing as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Pat Verbeek!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Harold Shipman!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Ian Loll and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shipman looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.


It looks like Harold Shipman has been cut.
Shipman tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Verbeek manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Verbeek throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Shipman on the side of the head.
Verbeek throws out a leg kick but Shipman moves out of range and Verbeek only half commits.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Verbeek enables Shipman to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Verbeek manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Shipman is in close to Verbeek's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Verbeek is adopting a defensive guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Shipman thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Verbeek utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Verbeek knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Shipman on the ground.

Shipman drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Verbeek manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Shipman has Verbeek in his guard.

Verbeek wants to control from the top but Shipman keeps moving.

Verbeek will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Shipman is looking for a triangle but Verbeek pushes his legs off easily.

Shipman drops back looking for a leg! Verbeek is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Verbeek manages to kick Shipman off! Shipman jumps back into Verbeek's guard.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Verbeek throws a low kick but it's checked well by Shipman.
Shipman looks like he wants to counter punch here.

Shipman swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Verbeek uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Shipman.
We've been told by Verbeek's head coaches at Guerrilla MMA that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Shipman moves in looking to clinch but Verbeek pushes him off.
Verbeek is looking to chop away at Shipman's legs.
Shipman has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Shipman catches Verbeek with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Shipman looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Verbeek is fending him off so far but Shipman persists. Nope, Verbeek circles away and we're back to standing.

Shipman has tried to improve his agility in the runup to this fight.
Verbeek fails to land with a series of punches.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Verbeek moves into the clinch.
Verbeek tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Verbeek prevents a takedown attempt there.
Shipman is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Pat Verbeek has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Harold Shipman.

Shipman blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Verbeek scores with a shot to the side of Shipman's head.
Shipman drops down looking for an ankle pick but Verbeek pulls his leg out and moves away.
Verbeek lands a hook that stumbles Shipman back into the cage. Verbeek follows up with a straight and another hook that land right on the button, dropping Shipman to the canvas! Verbeek pounces and lands several unanswered shots - Shipman has had enough and taps out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:19 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). Pat Verbeek!
