PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Nick Power (ranked 4940 p4p, 530 weight class) and Blaine Callaghan (ranked 3977 p4p, 457 weight class). Callaghan has chosen The Foggy Dew as his entrance music. The key to victory for Nick Power has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nick Power!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Blaine Callaghan!
The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Winston Howard and Francis DeMontford.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Callaghan throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Power lands with a nice body punch.
Callaghan avoids a punch combination nicely.
Power swings for the body but Callaghan moves out of range.
Power shoots in but no luck this time.
Callaghan throws the left hand but Power avoids the punch easily.
Power tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Callaghan defends well and Power ends up having to push Callaghan into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Callaghan checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Callaghan swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Power tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Callaghan misses with a left hand
and Power counters with a straight right hand.
Callaghan throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Power sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Power doesn't manage to clinch there - Callaghan circles away.

Power misses with a head kick.
Power shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Callaghan sprawls well. Callaghan wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Power gets slowly back to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nick Power. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Nice defenses there by Power.
Power wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Power.
Power throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Power throws a solid leg kick but Callaghan takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Power.

Callaghan has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Power finds it's way round the side to connect with Callaghan's head.
Power slips a jab and a cross from Callaghan.

Callaghan throws a wild body kick that Power sees coming a mile off.
Power slips a straight right by Callaghan.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Power.
Power bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Horrible takedown attempt by Power or perhaps it was just good defense by Callaghan, which made it look bad.

Power pushes Callaghan up against the cage in a clinch.
Power using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Callaghan has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Power tries a body shot but Callaghan blocks it.

Power is trying to push Callaghan away but Callaghan has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Power has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Callaghan uses from the top position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Callaghan stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Power throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Callaghan.
It seemed like Callaghan was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Power fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Power doesn't manage to clinch there - Callaghan circles away.
Power looks to land a combination but Callaghan avoids it well.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
No joy there for Callaghan, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Power pulls out of a head kick attempt.
It seemed like Callaghan was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Power tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Callaghan swivels and escapes.
Power is looking to land body kicks.
Power dives in and grabs Callaghan's left leg, looking for a takedown. Callaghan pushes down on Power's head and hops out.
Power tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Callaghan paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Callaghan blocks a head kick by Power.
Power with a poor takedown
and Callaghan counters with a stiff right hand.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nick Power. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Power tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Callaghan manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

We are yet to see a takedown attempt from Callaghan in the fight. On paper you would think he is the more dominant ground fighter so let's see if these unusual tactics pay off.
Callaghan connects with a right hand. Power shakes it off.

Callaghan pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

Callaghan breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Callaghan keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Power.

Power will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Power is looking light on his feet compared to last time was saw him fight.

Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Callaghan.
Power will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Callaghan swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Callaghan is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Power.
Power shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Callaghan as he jumps to the side.

Callaghan tries to bum rush Power with a series of wild strikes but Power uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Power wants to clinch.
No luck for Power with that takedown attempt.
Callaghan now looks to counter with a shot at the body.
Power doesn't manage to clinch there - Callaghan circles away.

Power takes the fight into the clinch.
Callaghan keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Power's efforts to push away.

Power takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

Nick Power seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Power gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Callaghan.

Blaine Callaghan showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Power's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

and Callaghan cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Power shoots in looking for a takedown. Callaghan tries to sprawl out of it but Power keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Callaghan manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Blaine Callaghan comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Callaghan has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
