PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Anthony Pettis (ranked 3032 p4p, 258 weight class) and Gustavo Santos (ranked 3347 p4p, 279 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Anthony Pettis has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Anthony Pettis seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 28 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gustavo Santos!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, David Schapiro and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Santos moves in looking to clinch but Pettis pushes him off.
Santos tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Pettis manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
An attempted straight right counter from Pettis misses the target.
Pettis looks to score with a jab to the body but Santos is just out of range.
Pettis comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

Santos gets a clinch.
Pettis is trying to break free.
Santos's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

Santos tries to work over Pettis's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.

A quick step to the side and Pettis tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.

Pettis breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

and Pettis cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Santos gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Pettis wants to break the clinch but can't.
Santos scores with an uppercut up the middle.
Santos will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Pettis up against the cage.

The ref breaks the fighters up, due to lack of action by Gustavo Santos.

Pettis was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.

Pettis wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Santos has him pressed against the cage.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Pettis is trying to break the clinch but Santos has him pressed against the cage.

Santos manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Gustavo Santos showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

Santos throws a lazy right hand but Pettis sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Pettis swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Pettis scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
Pettis fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Santos tries to counter with a clinch but Pettis shakes him off and moves away.
A combination from Santos does no damage.

and Pettis counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.


It looks like Gustavo Santos has been cut.

letting Pettis counter with a right hand.

Santos tries to clinch but Pettis moves out of range.

Pettis fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Santos sprawls well initially but Pettis persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Santos is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Santos is refusing to be controlled, as Pettis sits in half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Santos is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Pettis jumps into side control!
