PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Dwain Lara (ranked 9215 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe Gunner (ranked 6053 p4p, 0 weight class). Joe Gunner told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dwain Lara!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Joe Gunner!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Robert Twigg and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lara tries to score a power double leg takedown but Gunner sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Lara somewhat.
Gunner leaves Lara with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Gunner shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Gunner engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lara looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Gunner slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gunner stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lara swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Gunner's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Lara controls Gunner momentarily but Gunner frees himself.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Gunner shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Lara manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Gunner looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

Gunner gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Lara gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Gunner to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Gunner is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Lara is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Lara has escaped and now he's on top!


Gunner has his foot on Lara's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Lara works his way back into a safe position though.
Lara wanted to stand there but Gunner had control of the position.

Lara would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Gunner throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
Lara wanted to stand there but Gunner had control of the position.
Lara really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Gunner is trying to control the position but Lara postures up.

Gunner had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Lara defends it easily.
Gunner pulls Lara in close to his closed guard and prevents Lara from doing any damage or advancing position.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Lara wants to stand but Gunner has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Gunner dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Gunner shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Gunner was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lara is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Lara wants to control but Gunner postures up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Gunner working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Gunner swings around for an armbar but Lara sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Gunner's guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Gunner is looking for a triangle but Lara pushes his legs off easily.
Gunner is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Lara has gone for a leg lock! Gunner slips out almost immediately though and dives into Lara's guard.

Lara wants to sweep but no luck.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Lara working a defensive guard but Gunner manages to pass into side control anyway.
You can see the frustration on Lara's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Gunner staying calm.

Gunner tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Lara tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
Gunner controlling the pace for now.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joe Gunner showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!



Gunner fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Lara, pushing him back against the cage.
Lara can't break the clinch.

Gunner breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Gunner throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
It looked like Lara was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Lara enables Gunner to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Lara manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Lara is looking to stand back up but Gunner counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Lara.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Gunner thows a huge punch but Lara dodges it nicely.
Lara moves into full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gunner is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Lara tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Gunner not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Lara will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Gunner missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Gunner engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Lara utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Gunner gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Gunner shoots in and bounces Lara off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Gunner's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Lara pulls Gunner in close to prevent any damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Lara is working an open guard so Gunner takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Gunner walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Lara checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Lara.

Gunner drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Gunner postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Gunner wants to pass the guard but Lara is keeping the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Lara wants to sweep but no luck.

Gunner gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Gunner misses with the body kick

and Lara counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Gunner manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Lara keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Gunner's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Joe Gunner comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Gunner has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
