PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Wuang Liu Chen (ranked 25466 p4p, 691 weight class) and Carson Wood (ranked 6115 p4p, 556 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Daniel Franklin and Wesley Smith.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wood fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Chen, pushing him back against the cage.
Chen has Wood pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Wood manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Wood has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Chen clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Wood is throwing punches to the body, looking to soften Chen up.
Chen covers up after that shot from Wood.

Wood is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Chen has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Wood lands with a big left hand that may well have hurt his opponent. Can Chen hold on?!
Wood looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Wood looking to soften up his opponent with punches.
Chen turns into Wood and is now in his guard.

Wood kicks Chen off and gets to his feet.
Wood misses with a double jab.
Chen connects with an inside leg kick.
Chen with a poor takedown

and Wood counters with a single leg into guard. Chen didn't expect that.

Wood is pushing down on Chen's leg trying to pass to half guard. Chen is fighting to maintain full guard but Wood has managed to sneak the leg through.
Chen has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Wood is working away from the top position though.

Wood wants to work for an arm triangle but Chen is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Wood tries to pass to full mount but Chen defends it.
Wood takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Wood is working for a submission of some sort.

Wood seems to be working for a kimura but Chen defends the submission attempt.
Chen is in trouble now - Wood has advanced to mount!

Chen is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Wood lands a big shot there that rocks Chen but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Wood breaks from Chen's wrist control and lands an elbow.

Wood is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Chen to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Chen shrugs it off.

Wood is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Chen is surviving well by controlling Wood's body position as best he can.

Wood is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Chen has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Chen takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.

Wood is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Chen has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Chen!

Chen avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Wood is on top in guard.

Wood postures up in Chen's guard and throws a big left but Chen blocks it.
Wood won't allow Chen to sweep him here.
Wood stands and throws Chen's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Chen is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Wood lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Wood landing a few strikes.
Wood is working Chen over with some ground and pound from side control.

Wood is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Chen has escaped the position, nice work there.
Chen prevents Wood from improving position.
Chen knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Wood on the ground.
Chen is trying to improve his position.

Wood thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Wood creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Carson Wood dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Chen leaves Wood with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Chen is defended easily by Wood.
Wood looks to score with a jab to the body but Chen is just out of range.
Chen is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Chen tries to close the distance and clinch but Wood swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Chen misses with a takedown attempt - Wood sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Chen slips a straight right by Wood.

Chen shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Wood pinned against the cage. Wood gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Wuang Liu Chen. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Chen misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Wood.
Chen shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Wood as he jumps to the side.

and Wood counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Wood.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Wood postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Wood has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Wood is working Chen over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Chen has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Wood can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Wood is in close to Chen's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Wood advances position into side control!

Wood is working to tighten his grip on Chen's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Chen has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Wood is really squeezing tight and eventually Chen passes out! Wood breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!
