PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Micky Ward (ranked 8185 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mirsad Fajic (ranked 7562 p4p, 0 weight class). Ward has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Micky Ward!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Mirsad Fajic!
The judges for this bout are David Hoff, Santiago Holmes and Peter Branson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Fajic has closed the distance and engaged Ward in a clinch.

Fajic manages to break the clinch.

Fajic drives through with a takedown into Ward's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Fajic throwing strikes but missing.
Ward might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Fajic trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Ward manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Fajic can do anything to dispel that myth.

Fajic is looking for a triangle but Ward pushes his legs off easily.
Fajic is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Fajic isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Ward stacks Fajic on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Ward!

Fajic really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ward. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Ward blocks the strikes from Fajic.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Fajic tries to bench press Ward off him but Ward keeps the position.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Fajic drives through and clinches with Ward against the cage.

Fajic escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Ward enables Fajic to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Ward manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Fajic with a flurry of punches that miss.

Fajic is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Ward is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Ward has escaped and now he's on top!

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Fajic tries to bench press Ward off him but Ward keeps the position.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Fajic throwing some weak shots from the bottom that do no damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Fajic tries to strike but it doesn't land.
Fajic is looking to reverse the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Fajic throws an elbow to the body but it doesn't land.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Fajic chipping away with strikes from the bottom.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Mirsad Fajic will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Fajic closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Ward's guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Fajic accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Fajic tried to score with a low kick but Ward checks it.
Ward shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Fajic but Fajic pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Fajic fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Ward sprawls well initially but Fajic persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Fajic thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Ward's head.

Fajic is looking for a kimura but Ward is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Fajic to get the leverage.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Fajic looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Ward with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Fajic is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Fajic bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Well Fajic has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
