PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Joey Hatton (ranked 1607 p4p, 201 weight class) and Jack Anvile (ranked 2961 p4p, 341 weight class). Hatton's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, deadman. Jack Anvile is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joey Hatton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jack Anvile!
The judges for this bout are Francis DeMontford, Hugh Johnson and Ben Hemmingworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Anvile throws a head kick but Hatton moves out of range.
Hatton closes this distance looking for a takedown but Anvile circles away.
Anvile lands with a nice combination. Hatton backs away looking to recover.
Hatton throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Anvile's waist but Anvile gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Hatton off to one side.
Anvile swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Anvile throws a body shot but no joy.

Hatton feints and as Anvile raises his hands in defense, Hatton changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Anvile looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Hatton tries to free his leg and advance position but Anvile is retaining full guard.
Anvile keeping moving, preventing Hatton from controlling successfully.
Anvile looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hatton is one step ahead there.

Hatton stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Anvile swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Hatton postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Anvile is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Hatton, into his guard.


Hatton looking for subs off his back but Anvile has passed one foot through into half guard.
Hatton is trying to get back to full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Anvile takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Anvile lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Anvile sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Anvile wants to pass to mount but Hatton is defending the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Anvile perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Hatton trying to hold on to Anvile's head to control him but Anvile postures up.
Hatton gets back to full guard.
Anvile slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Anvile is in close to Hatton's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Anvile controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Hatton has his foot on Anvile's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Anvile works his way back into a safe position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jack Anvile dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Anvile looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Anvile throws a nice outside leg kick.
Anvile keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Anvile is looking for the big counter here.
Hatton closes the distance and clinches up with Anvile, looking for a takedown. Hatton pushes Anvile against the cage but Anvile circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Anvile finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Hatton attempts a counter takedown but Anvile avoids it well and moves away.
Anvile is looking to slow Hatton down with leg kicks.
Jack Anvile is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Anvile throws a series of punches but Hatton moves out of range.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A head kick by Anvile misses

and Hatton counters with a takedown into side control.
Anvile is looking to reverse the position.
Anvile gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Hatton is looking for a kimura but Anvile is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Hatton to get the leverage.
Anvile is concentrating on defense, preventing Hatton from advancing position.
Hatton is looking to advance position but Anvile won't allow it.
Hatton moves into full mount! Anvile won't be happy about that!
Anvile tries to hold on but Hatton postures up.

Hatton has hold of Anvile's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Anvile manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Hatton goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Anvile is on top in guard.

Hatton working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Anvile doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Anvile manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Hatton is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Anvile wants to control from the top but Hatton keeps moving.
Anvile might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Hatton haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Hatton is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Anvile is looking for a sweep. Hatton is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Anvile preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Hatton wants to free his trapped foot but Anvile is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Hatton is trying to control the position but Anvile postures up.
Anvile landing with the ground and pound.

That was a close second round but I would say that Joey Hatton will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


Anvile throws a lazy right hand but Hatton sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Hatton fails with the takedown.
As Hatton backs off Anvile throws a huge counter combo but Hatton manages to avoid it all.
Anvile has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Anvile waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Hatton.
Anvile throws out a loose jab but Hatton uses good head movement to avoid it.
Hatton fails with the takedown.
Anvile throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hatton tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.

Hatton shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Hatton was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Anvile is trying to control Hatton's posture but Hatton avoids it.

Hatton wants to lay and pray for a moment but Anvile keeps working.
Anvile regains half guard.

Hatton is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Anvile defends it well.
Anvile has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.
Hatton is thwarting Anvile's attempts to control the position.
Hatton tries to pass to full mount but Anvile defends it.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Anvile has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Hatton is working away from the top position though.
Anvile tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Hatton has advanced to mount. Uh oh.
Anvile wants to control but Hatton is having none of it.
Hatton wants to take Anvile's back here but Anvile is holding on to an arm, himself looking to escape.
Anvile wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.

Hatton looking to break Anvile's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Anvile remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Hatton will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

Hatton is working the back position looking for the choke. Oh, he's slid into an armbar! Beautiful transition and Anvile taps out! Fantastic Jiu Jitsu from Hatton.
