The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendez tries to clinch up
and Gardner counters with a stiff right hand.
Mendez tries for a takedown but Gardner circles away easily
and Gardner counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Mendez swings for the body but Gardner moves out of range.
Gardner moves into range and connects with a jab.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mendez fails in his attempt to clinch.

Gardner blocks a head kick by Mendez.
Mendez throws an off balance right hand
and Gardner counters with a nice body shot.

Gardner misses with a series of wild punches.
Gardner throws a head kick that misses.
Mendez misses with a takedown
and Gardner counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Nice jab there from Gardner.
Mendez on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Gardner avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Gardner cracks Mendez with a big right hand that sends him crashing to the floor. Gardner has the opportunity to follow him to the ground but instead he's beckoning Mendez to stand back up!
Mendez is rocked!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Mendez walks into a straight right, dropping him to the canvas! Gardner swarms him and finishes the fight with a hail of punches! What a brutal finish!
