PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ulysses Wood (ranked 6037 p4p, 0 weight class) and Esko Inkinen (ranked 5884 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ulysses Wood!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Esko Inkinen!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Johanna Lukiainen and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Wood closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Wood lands in his opponent's guard.
Inkinen wants to sweep but no luck.
Inkinen really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Wood. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Wood seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Wood throwing strikes from guard but Inkinen blocks nicely.
Wood controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Wood drops back looking for a leg! Inkinen is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Inkinen manages to kick Wood off! Wood jumps back into Inkinen's guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wood is in close to Inkinen's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Wood won't allow Inkinen to sweep him here.
Wood seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Wood has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Wood stays in close to Inkinen's body and controls the position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Inkinen misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Wood.
Inkinen fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Wood manages to avoid it.

Wood closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Inkinen quickly recovers to half guard.
Wood working the head and body with strikes.
Wood seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Wood throwing shots but Inkinen is blocking nicely.
Wood scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Wood is trying to control the action in half guard but Inkinen is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Wood not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Wood is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Wood will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Wood is nestled in close to Inkinen, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Wood is trying to control. Inkinen wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Wood looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Wood not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Wood seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Inkinen missing with punches from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Inkinen has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Wood is working away from the top position though.
Wood throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Wood stalling.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Wood drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Wood steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Inkinen.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ulysses Wood dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Inkinen throws a nice looking combination but Wood bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Wood changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Inkinen looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Inkinen wants to control but Wood postures up.
Wood working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.

Wood thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Wood decides to stand back up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Inkinen pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Inkinen misses with a lunging right hand
and Wood counters with a two punch combo.
Wood on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.


It looks like Ulysses Wood has been cut.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Wood darts in and clinches Inkinen up against the cage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Wood misses with a shot to the kidneys.

Wood has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Inkinen uses from the top position.
Inkinen is in close to Wood's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Inkinen is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Wood has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Inkinen is looking to defend but Wood has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Inkinen! Wood pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Inkinen taps out and this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:38 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Ulysses Wood!
