PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Van Johnson (ranked 5992 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rene Juul (ranked 3775 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Daniel Franklin and Stewart Dunkirk.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson keeps the fight on the outside.
Johnson takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?

Juul shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Johnson's guard.
Juul stands and throws Johnson's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Juul controls the position from side control.
A control attempt from Johnson but he's now mounted!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Juul looking to control but Johnson is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Juul goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Johnson turns into him and now he's in Juul's guard.

Johnson gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Johnson misses with a series of wild punches.
Juul throws a counter combo.
Johnson looks to score with a jab to the body but Juul is just out of range.

Juul forces Johnson back against the cage and clinches.
Johnson is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Juul to keep the fight standing.

Johnson pulls guard successfully.
Johnson will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Juul trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Johnson is on top in guard.

Juul wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Juul wants to stand but Johnson is controlling the position.
Johnson postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Johnson working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Juul's head.
Johnson wants to get up but he can't break Juul's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Juul looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Johnson passes into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Juul tries to roll over but Johnson keeps him under control.

Johnson stands up and beckons Juul to join him on the feet.

Johnson has taken the fight to the clinch.

Juul's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Johnson shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Juul as he avoids it easily.

Juul scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Johnson gets back to full guard.
Johnson is breathing heavily.

Juul avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Juul trying to control but Johnson is working from the bottom.

Johnson has his hands on Juul's head, controlling the position.
Johnson wants to sweep here but Juul controlling him for the moment.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Juul decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Johnson, up you get!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Van Johnson will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Juul gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Juul gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Juul is keen to just control but Johnson is a slippery customer.
Johnson is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Juul's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Juul's back!

Johnson looking to break Juul's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Juul remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Johnson will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
Johnson doesn't have the hooks in and Juul manages to turn into his guard.
Juul wants to control from the top but Johnson keeps moving.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Johnson is on top in guard.

Juul not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Johnson throwing strikes from guard but Juul blocks nicely.
Johnson throws a big elbow that misses.
Van Johnson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Juul has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Johnson doesn't defend quickly enough and Juul has managed to lock this one up! Can Johnson escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Juul on a fantastic submission victory.
