PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Teabwana Jienk (ranked 1384 p4p, 177 weight class) and Dustin Assad (ranked 5338 p4p, 484 weight class). Dustin Assad is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Teabwana Jienk!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Dustin Assad!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Joseph Jones and John Roberts.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Assad swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Assad misses with a hook.
Jienk attempts a counter takedown but Assad avoids it well and moves away.

Jienk has closed the distance and engaged Assad in a clinch.
Assad swings wildly with an uppercut but Jienk uses good head movement to avoid it.

Assad escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Assad looks to land a left hand but Jienk moved out of range nicely.
Jienk tries to counter with a takedown but Assad is quick to defend against it.
No joy there for Assad, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Jienk has closed the distance and engaged Assad in a clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Assad pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Jienk takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Assad scores with a hook to the body. Jienk takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Assad tries for a takedown but Jienk circles away easily
and Jienk counters with a one-two to the body.

Assad keeps the fight on the outside.

Jienk gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Assad misses with a punch on the inside.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Assad.

Assad breaks from the clinch.
Jienk looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Jienk tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Assad.
Jienk tries to counter with a takedown but Assad is quick to defend against it.
Assad works Jienk's body with a nice hook.

Jienk drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Assad tries to get back to half guard but can't.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Jienk has control of an arm but Assad manages to advance to Jienk's back!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Jienk wants to escape the position.

Assad working for a choke but Jienk is defending well.

Assad has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Jienk has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Jienk is trying to break free.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Assad looking to break Jienk's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Jienk remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Assad will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!
I really don't envy Jienk right now.
Assad missing with punches from the back.
Assad throws a big right hand but he misses and hits the mat. Ouch.

Assad avoiding Jienk 's attempts to control his hands.
Jienk is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Assad is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Assad doesn't have the hooks in and Jienk manages to turn into his guard.
Jienk is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Jienk passes Assad's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Jienk is thwarting Assad's attempts to control the position.
Jienk keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Jienk passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Assad!

Assad wants to control but Jienk is having none of it.
Assad tries to control the position but Jienk now has his back.
Jienk has the hooks in. Assad is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

I really don't envy Assad right now.
Jienk slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.
Jienk controlling well, preventing Assad from escaping the position.

Assad is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Jienk gets his way!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Teabwana Jienk will probably get the nod.
That's time! Jienk's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Assad throws a hook but Jienk blocks it.
Assad misses the jab.

Jienk drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Jienk gets to mount! Assad was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
Assad is desperately trying to improve his position but Jienk has a good base and remains in mount.
Jienk forces the positional change into back control.
Jienk has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Assad's body.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Assad looking very determined here, making life difficult for Jienk.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
A bit of a pause in the action here. Jienk controlling the positon.

Assad wants to control his opponent's hands but Jienk gets his hands free.
Assad turns into Jienk and is now in his guard.

Jienk has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Assad can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Jienk looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Jienk working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Assad doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Assad manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Assad stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Jienk swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Jienk is pulling down on Assad's head. It's preventing any offense from Assad, at least for the moment.
Assad missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

Jienk is controlling Assad's posture.
Assad is looking to work some ground and pound but Jienk has wrist control.
Assad wants to pass the guard but Jienk is keeping the position.

Jienk has his foot on Assad's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Assad works his way back into a safe position though.

Jienk is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Jienk is looking to pass Assad's guard but actually Assad recovers to full guard.

Jienk has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Assad to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Jienk is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Assad pulls down on the head and he's put Jienk to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:44 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Dustin Assad!
Dustin Assad gave a mention to Organic Nutrition in his post fight interview. That will please them (and hopefully generate some sales).
