PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Randall Lawson (ranked 6698 p4p, 0 weight class) and Woody Jules (ranked 5907 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Randall Lawson !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Woody Jules!
The judges for this bout are Peter Branson, Winston Alpacca and Sandra Marshall.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jules tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Lawson defends well and Jules ends up having to push Lawson into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Lawson shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Jules but Jules pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Lawson misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Jules counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Jules rushes Lawson and presses him up against the cage.

Lawson breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Jules bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Lawson 's head backwards.
Jules tries to land a front kick but Lawson steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Lawson chopping away at his opponent's legs.

Lawson shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Jules napping and manages to drive through into side control!
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Jules striking from the bottom but nothing landed.
Lawson tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Jules is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Lawson wants to control but Jules is keeping him busy.
Jules tries to bench press Lawson off him but Lawson keeps the position.

Lawson decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Lawson tries to sprawl but Jules drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Lawson kicks off Jules and gets to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Lawson shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Lawson was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Jules is pushing Lawson 's head away, looking to escape. Lawson manages to hold on to the position though.
Jules tries to improve position but can't.
Lawson is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Jules's shoulder. That is not cool.
Jules is trying to control Lawson 's posture but Lawson avoids it.
Jules is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Lawson 's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Jules won't allow Lawson to pass to mount.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Lawson seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Lawson is nestled in close to Jules, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Lawson is keen to just control but Jules is a slippery customer.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Jules tries to roll over but Lawson keeps him under control.

Jules manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Lawson keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
Lawson prevents the takedown attempt.
Lawson slowing the pace effectively.
Lawson jumps guard but Jules stands there with Lawson around his waist. Lawson gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Jules is trying to pull guard but Lawson has him pressed against the cage.
Randall Lawson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Woody Jules.

Jules pulls guard.
Lawson wants to stand but Jules has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Woody Jules will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Lawson misses with a takedown attempt - Jules sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Randall Lawson overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Jules thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Jules wants to sweep here but Lawson controlling him for the moment.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Lawson keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Jules's head.
Jules will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Lawson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Lawson tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Jules swivels and escapes.
Jules avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Lawson misses with a takedown
and Jules counters with a one-two to the body.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Randall Lawson . That's going to take a lot out of him.

Jules passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Lawson !
Lawson tries to hold on but Jules pushes him away.

Lawson is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Jules is standing up, even though he is in mount.

Jules looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Lawson has one foot on Jules's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Woody Jules showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Jules tries to clinch up but Lawson circles away and keeps his distance.

Jules drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Lawson dodges the ground and pound from Jules.
Lawson is looking to regain half guard here but Jules keeps moving and retains side control.

Jules trying to control the action but Lawson is working from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lawson tries to buck Jules off but Jules is having none of it.

Lawson wants to control but Jules postures up.
Jules wants to lay and pray for a moment but Lawson keeps working.
Jules might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Lawson haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Jules tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Lawson throws a body kick that misses.
Randall Lawson is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Both fighters circling a little - Jules finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.
Jules is trying hard to land a takedown here. Lawson sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
A counter left hand to the body from Lawson misses its target.

Lawson has Jules up against the cage in a clinch.

Lawson breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Lawson steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Jules. That one must have hurt.
Jules circles away from the clinch attempt.
Jules throws a big counter head kick but Lawson avoids it with no problem.
Lawson tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Jules thows a body kick. Lawson tries to catch it but that hurt him.
Jules darts in looking for a takedown but Lawson gets double underhooks and turns Jules into the cage.

Lawson shoots in looking for a takedown but Jules manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Lawson 's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Lawson .
Jules changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.

Lawson shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Lawson was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Jules tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Lawson wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Lawson stands up.
Lawson avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Lawson is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Jules.

Lawson closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Lawson seems to be working for a kimura but Jules defends the submission attempt.

Jules is looking to control Lawson 's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Jules avoid being mounted?

Jules has one foot on Lawson 's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Jules shoots and misses
and Lawson counters with a stiff right hand.
Randall Lawson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Woody Jules.

Lawson instigates a clinch.

Jules breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Randall Lawson has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Woody Jules is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Jules closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Randall Lawson .
I think Jules has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
