The judges for this bout are William Peck, Gregory Folan and Trevor Gratis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hightower moves out of range of the strikes.
Hightower was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
We've been told by Hightower's head coaches at The Pit that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
A slow jab from Mercer misses its intended target.
Mercer throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Hightower fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Mercer manages to avoid it.
A nice side step and Mercer releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home.
Mercer throws out a leg kick but Hightower moves out of range and Mercer only half commits.

It looked like Hightower was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Mercer.
Alex Mercer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

We've been informed that Mercer has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.

It looked like Hightower was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Hightower slips under a jab from Mercer.
Hightower lands hard precision jab right on the jaw that stiffens Mercer up and sends him tumbling to the mat! The ref grabs Hightower from behind before he can pounce. Some folks in the crowd didn't like that stoppage, but I saw Mercer's eyes roll way back in his head, he was done.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Reed Hightower!
Reed Hightower was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
