PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Eric Staal (ranked 418 p4p, 53 weight class) and Jason Sturd Jr (ranked 290 p4p, 38 weight class). Sturd Jr has chosen Waka Flocka Flame - 50K (Neon Dreams Remix) as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 8 - 1, fighting out of New York, Eric Staal!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 33 - 12 - 2, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jason Sturd Jr!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Dean Styles and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Staal slips under a jab.
Staal scores with a sloppy right hand. Sturd Jr should have avoided that one.
Sturd Jr pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Staal attempts a counter takedown but Sturd Jr avoids it well and moves away.
Sturd Jr lands with a kick to the temple. Staal shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
That kick from Staal tenderised Sturd Jr's leg. Sturd Jr is trying to keep his angry face on.
Staal tries to move into range but Sturd Jr moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.

A looping hook to the body misses from Staal. Sturd Jr does a little dance to reset his feet.
It seemed like Sturd Jr was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Staal displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Sturd Jr throws out the jab.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Sturd Jr has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Staal feints and then cracks Sturd Jr's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Sturd Jr down.

Sturd Jr throws the kick towards the body but Staal avoids it.
Sturd Jr connects with a right hand. Staal shakes it off.

Staal just misses with a punch to the body.
Staal wants to slow Sturd Jr down by chopping away at his legs.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Staal has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

That was a close round but I would say that Eric Staal will probably get the nod.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Sturd Jr bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Staal is looking to regain half guard here but Sturd Jr keeps moving and retains side control.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Staal connects with a nice short shot to Sturd Jr's temple.

That was a close second round but I would say that Eric Staal will probably get the nod.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Staal throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Sturd Jr tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Staal is in Sturd Jr's guard.
Staal stays in close to Sturd Jr's body and controls the position.

Sturd Jr has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Staal off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Eric Staal.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Staal, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
