PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jack Anvile (ranked 4990 p4p, 466 weight class) and Hanyu Lee (ranked 6525 p4p, 552 weight class). Hanyu Lee will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jack Anvile!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Hanyu Lee!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Donatello Bradman and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Anvile tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Lee swivels and escapes.
Lee flicks out a counter leg kick but Anvile steps away.
Lee looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Lee throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Anvile.
Lee throws a sloppy head kick
letting Anvile counter with a right hand.
Lee misses with a left hand

and Anvile counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Lee really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Anvile. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Anvile definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Anvile tries to pass the half guard into mount. Lee knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Lee is looking for a sweep. Anvile is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Lee keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
Anvile looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Lee with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Anvile takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Lee tries to get to full guard but Anvile has control of the leg.

Lee felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Lee is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Lee looks like he's trying to stand up.
Anvile takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Lee throws a head kick but Anvile moves out of range.

Anvile was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.
Lee feints and then cracks Anvile's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Anvile down.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Lee tries a head kick but it misses.
Anvile shoots in looking for a takedown but Lee manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Anvile's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Anvile fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Lee avoids it really well and circles away.

Lee tries to bum rush Anvile with a series of wild strikes but Anvile uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Hanyu Lee seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

As Lee tries to get set, Anvile tries to push him back and clinch up but Lee manages to avoid the attempt.

Lee slaps away a takedown attempt from Anvile, before circling back to the center of the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jack Anvile. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Anvile takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

Anvile closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Lee to the mat! Lee manages to get full guard.
Lee is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Anvile's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Anvile will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Anvile has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Jack Anvile overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Hanyu Lee showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

The referee asks Anvile politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Anvile prefers to stall for the moment though.

You can see the frustration on Lee's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Lee seems a little lost for a moment, as Anvile dominates the positioning.
Anvile seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Lee for as long as he can get away with.

Anvile is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Lee will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Lee can do anything to dispel that myth.

Anvile tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Anvile has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Jack Anvile decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
