Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jason Gavin (ranked 7656 p4p, 609 weight class) and Michael Owings (ranked 5752 p4p, 532 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Michael Owings!
The judges for this bout are Patrick Alders, Albert Achterberg and Saam Ante.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Owings looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Gavin is fending him off so far but Owings persists. Nope, Gavin circles away and we're back to standing.
Gavin lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
Gavin is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Owings shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Gavin dives in for a single leg takedown but Owings sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Owings throws a one two combo.


It looks like Jason Gavin has been cut.
Gavin throws a head kick but Owings moves out of range.
Owings lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Owings turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
A looping hook to the body misses from Gavin. Owings does a little dance to reset his feet.
Gavin tries to clinch there but Owings circles away.
Gavin throws a push kick but Owings slaps the foot to one side.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Gavin darts in looking for a takedown but Owings gets double underhooks and turns Gavin into the cage.

and Gavin counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Owings throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Owings tries to clinch there but Gavin circles away.
Gavin tries to close the distance and clinch but Owings swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Owings is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Gavin with a body shot.

Gavin changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Owings tries to avoid it but Gavin manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Owings to the ground. Owings escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Owings throws a sloppy head kick and Gavin moves out of range easily.
Gavin throws the kick towards the body but Owings avoids it.

Owings is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.

Gavin goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Owings throws a head kick that half lands.
Owings avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Gavin uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.

Owings lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.

Gavin goes for a double leg but Owings avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Owings continues to drive forward.
Gavin tries to score a power double leg takedown but Owings sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Gavin somewhat.

Owings's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Owings has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Gavin uses from the top position.
Gavin is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Gavin shoots in looking for a takedown. Owings tries to sprawl out of it but Gavin keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Owings manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Gavin looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Gavin throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Owings's waist but Owings gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gavin off to one side.
Michael Owings seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Owings misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
The crowd cheers as Owings lands an impressive looking overhand right. Gavin doesn't seem phased though.
Gavin rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Owings moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Well Owings has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
