Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Erik Hughes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Kid Papa!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Micheangelo Fripello and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hughes closes the distance and clinches.
Hughes jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Papa walks away with a smile on his face. Hughes gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Hughes tries to clinch but Papa moves out of range.
Hughes throws a head kick but Papa moves out of range.
Papa changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt.
Papa swings for the body but Hughes moves out of range.
Hughes went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Erik Hughes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Papa gets a clinch.
Hughes is trying to force a seperation but Papa has the dominant position.
Papa misses with an elbow strike.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hughes wants to break free but Papa has control.
Papa using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Hughes has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Papa lands a knee to the body.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Papa pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Papa drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Hughes really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Papa controlling from the top position.
Let's hope that Papa has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Papa.

Hughes is trying to control the position but Papa postures up.
Papa slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Hughes not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Hughes feints and then cracks Papa's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Papa down.
Papa cracks the inside of Hughes's front leg.

Papa closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Hughes quickly recovers to half guard.
Papa is controlling the pace.
It looks like Papa might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Hughes is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Papa's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Papa's back!

Papa defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Hughes's arms.
Papa tries to roll but Hughes sticks to his back.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Papa is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kid Papa dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Hughes wants to break free but Papa has control.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Papa.
Hughes tries to pull guard but Papa forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Hughes fails to pull the fight into his guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hughes tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Erik Hughes. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hughes is trying to pull guard but Papa has him pressed against the cage.
Papa has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Papa takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Hughes throws a sloppy strike and Papa has hooked up an armbar on the loose arm! He's turned and extended fully! Hughes is forced to tap! Great BJJ from Papa!
