PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Virgil Clay (ranked 5858 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pticung Lee (ranked 7408 p4p, 0 weight class). Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Virgil Clay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Pticung Lee!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Jeff Smith and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lee throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Clay was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
Lee lands a jab-cross combination.

Clay clinches up against the cage.
Lee has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Lee looks winded!

Clay has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Lee is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

Lee breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Clay is trying to trip Lee. He has hold of a leg but Lee is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Clay persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Clay connects with a nice short shot to Lee's temple.

Clay is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Lee sees it coming and defends easily.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Clay lands a nice short elbow.
Lee wants to get back to full guard.
Clay is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Clay is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Lee defends it well.

Clay is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Lee is just riding it out for now. Clay eventually gives up the hold.

Clay is working for a kimura but Lee is defending it quite comfortably.
Clay has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Clay looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Lee with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Lee working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Clay holds on and takes a little breather.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Lee gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Clay makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Clay.

Clay manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Lee takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Clay fails to land with a series of punches.
Lee drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Clay defends it well.

Lee shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Lee was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

This has been an exciting period of action!

Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Clay.
Lee unleashes a big counter combination but Clay bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
