PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Masaya Kubo (ranked 4887 p4p, 0 weight class) and Roger Jones (ranked 3395 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Masaya Kubo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Roger Jones!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Sandra Marshall and Michael Johnstone.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kubo fails to land the takedown.
Kubo is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Jones swings for the body but Kubo moves out of range.
Kubo appears to be looking for a big counter.
Jones is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Jones clinches up with Kubo and pushes him back against the cage.

Jones escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Jones closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Jones lands in his opponent's guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kubo has Jones pulled in close to control his posture.
Kubo continues to stall.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Jones stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kubo swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kubo pulls Jones in to control the position.
Jones really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kubo. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Jones scoring with punches to the head and body.
Jones tries to stand but Kubo is controlling from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kubo has his hands on Jones's head, controlling the position.
Jones is looking to advance position but Kubo has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!


That's two minutes gone in the round.
Jones can't escape the position.
Kubo with the ground and pound from mount.
Kubo thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.
Jones is desperately trying to improve his position but Kubo has a good base and remains in mount.
Kubo throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Jones because Kubo loaded up on that one.
Kubo pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Kubo controlling the position easily from mount.
Kubo throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Kubo working for a guillotine from mount but Jones is in no mood to give up.
Kubo sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Jones keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Poor strikes thrown by Kubo there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Kubo controlling from mount.
Kubo misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Jones tries to improve his position but instead Kubo has taken his back!
Jones is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
Kubo trying to control momentarily.
I really don't envy Jones right now.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Kubo tries to get the hooks in deep but Jones pushed the leg off.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The cut man is working on Roger Jones's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


A thudding body kick lands there by Jones!
Jones blocks a head kick by Kubo.
Jones lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Kubo backs up against the cage.
Jones looks for a takedown but Kubo sprawls well.
Kubo shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Jones as he avoids it easily.
Kubo darts in trying to clinch
and Jones counters with a one-two to the body.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kubo throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Jones's waist but Jones gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kubo off to one side.

Kubo has managed to clinch.
Jones prevents a takedown attempt there.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Masaya Kubo. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Kubo wants to stall.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kubo drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Kubo wants to break the clinch but can't.
A nice left hand lands by Jones.
Kubo is trying to drag Jones to the mat but Jones just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Jones manages to pull guard.
Kubo won't allow Jones to sweep him here.

Jones had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Kubo defends it easily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Kubo throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Kubo throws a big right hand that misses.
Kubo is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Kubo has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Kubo gets tackled into the cage by Jones. Jones maintains the clinch.
Jones wants a takedown.
Kubo is trying to pull guard but Jones turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Jones tries a knee to the head but he's missed.

Jones gets control of Kubo's arms and successfully pulls guard. Jones will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Kubo tries to stand but Jones is controlling from the bottom.
Jones preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kubo would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Kubo postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Kubo advances to half guard.
Kubo uses his free foot to push down on Jones's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Jones.
Jones is trying desperately to improve position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Jones wants to hold on but Kubo pushes him away.
Kubo controlling from mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Roger Jones showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!


Kubo tries to clinch but Jones is having none of it.

and Kubo counters with a left and a right that stings Jones.
No luck for Kubo with that takedown attempt.
Kubo fails with a takedown attempt.
Jones throws a one two combo.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Jones is defended easily by Kubo.

Jones moves into the clinch.
Kubo jumps guard but Jones turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Jones has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Kubo avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Jones has picked Kubo up - he's going for a ride! Jones dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Kubo moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Kubo trying to keep a closed guard but Jones is proving a slippery customer.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Kubo seems keen to control Jones's posture.
Jones trying to control the position from guard on top but Kubo is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Kubo is pulling down on Jones's head. It's preventing any offense from Jones, at least for the moment.
Kubo wants to sweep here but Jones controlling him for the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Kubo.
Jones fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Kubo dives in for a single leg takedown but Jones sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Kubo fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kubo moves out of range as Jones throws a body kick.
Kubo takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Jones looks to land a combination but Kubo avoids it well.

Jones fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Kubo, pushing him back against the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kubo jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Jones walks away with a smile on his face. Kubo gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Kubo fails with the takedown.
Jones fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Kubo avoids it really well and circles away.
Jones leaves Kubo with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Jones looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Kubo avoids the head kick by Jones.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Jones moves into the clinch.
Kubo prevents a takedown attempt there.
Jones is pushing Kubo up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

And that's the end of the fight!
Roger Jones comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Jones has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
