Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ulysses Ratliff (ranked 25346 p4p, 0 weight class) and Birger Nielsen (ranked 5805 p4p, 446 weight class). Birger Nielsen will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ulysses Ratliff!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Birger Nielsen!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Franklyn Lucas and Dean Styles.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Ratliff wants to get back to striking at distance but Nielsen won't allow it.
Ratliff tries to land knees in the clinch but Nielsen avoids the damage to the body.

Nielsen's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Nielsen will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Nielsen fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Ratliff checks it well.
Ratliff lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Nielsen tries to score a power double leg takedown but Ratliff sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Nielsen somewhat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Nielsen shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

Nielsen drops back, looking for a kneebar! Ratliff looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Ratliff looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Ratliff!

Nielsen is looking to escape.
Nielsen is looking to improve his position.

Nielsen looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.
Ratliff knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Nielsen on the ground.
Nielsen is concentrating on defense, preventing Ratliff from advancing position.
Nielsen wants to get back to his feet.
Ratliff could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Ratliff not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Nielsen is looking to improve his position.
Ratliff is thwarting Nielsen's attempts to control the position.

Nielsen blocking the ground and pound attempt from Ratliff.
Nielsen slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Nielsen is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Nielsen is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Nielsen is looking to stand but Ratliff has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
A nice elbow there by Nielsen.
Nielsen controlling his opponent.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Nielsen lands a couple of good shots and Ratliff has given up his back, trying to escape the position!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Nielsen slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nielsen rushes Ratliff and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Nielsen. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Nielsen gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Ratliff is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Nielsen dives into side control.


Nielsen goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Ratliff has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Nielsen but great work by Ratliff.
Nielsen is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Nielsen moves into full guard.
Ratliff might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Nielsen seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Nielsen lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Nielsen is continuing to stall.
Nielsen stands up over Ratliff, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Nielsen is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Ratliff has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Nielsen has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.
Ratliff is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Nielsen pushes Ratliff back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.

Nielsen manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Nielsen pulls Ratliff in close to prevent any damage.
Nielsen's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Nielsen wants to sweep but no luck.
Nielsen is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Ratliff throws an elbow that misses. Nielsen uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Ratliff's guard. Nice move by Nielsen!

Birger Nielsen has got the better of the ground game so far.
Nielsen sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Ratliff's guard.
Nielsen slips a nice elbow through Ratliff's hands, connecting with Ratliff's forehead.
Nielsen winds up and cracks Ratliff with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Nielsen content to control rather than advance.
The adventures of Nielsen the control monster continue. Boring.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Nielsen has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Nielsen scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Still in half guard, Nielsen seems content to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Birger Nielsen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Ratliff shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Nielsen but Nielsen pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Nielsen shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Ratliff pushes Nielsen off but Nielsen dives into side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Nielsen is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Ratliff knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Ratliff tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Nielsen wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Nielsen goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Ratliff rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Nielsen's guard! Nice work there by Ratliff!
Ratliff is fighting to break Nielsen's control of his arms but Nielsen is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Nielsen wants to get back to his feet but Ratliff is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Ratliff throws a strike but Nielsen rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Nielsen postures up and lands a big shot to Ratliff's brow.

Nielsen looking to pass the guard.
Ratliff has momentary wrist control but Nielsen slips an elbow through the middle.
Nielsen makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Nielsen is pushing down on Ratliff's leg trying to pass to half guard. Ratliff is fighting to maintain full guard but Nielsen has managed to sneak the leg through.
Ratliff won't allow Nielsen to pass to mount.

Nielsen is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Ratliff doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Nielsen.

Nielsen wants to stand up but Ratliff is controlling the position.
Well, if Nielsen is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Nielsen working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Well Nielsen has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
