PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Samual Marquez (ranked 8201 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mathias Rekve (ranked 5759 p4p, 0 weight class). Mathias Rekve told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Samual Marquez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mathias Rekve!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Skip Squint and Ben Hemmingworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Marquez throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Marquez sets himself, and Rekve steps forward looking for the clinch! Marquez avoids it this time.
Mathias Rekve seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Rekve shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Marquez manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Marquez could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Rekve passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Rekve decides to stand back up. Rekve steps back and let's Marquez get back to his feet.
Rekve tries to close the distance and clinch up but Marquez swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Rekve stands up from Marquez's guard - Rekve perhaps looking for a knockout.
Rekve is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Marquez enables Rekve to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Marquez manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Marquez has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Rekve is working away from the top position though.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Rekve postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Rekve throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Marquez was covering up waiting for the punch and Rekve finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Rekve gets to his feet - Marquez follows without any prompting.

Rekve takes the fight into the clinch.

Rekve ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Rekve no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Rekve looking to hit a scissor sweep but Marquez is one step ahead there.

Rekve manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Marquez manages to get himself to full guard.

Rekve stays in close to Marquez's body and controls the position.

Rekve gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Marquez ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Rekve moves away.
Rekve wants to clinch.

Rekve shoots in and bounces Marquez off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Marquez had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Rekve defends it easily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Rekve got a little sloppy there for a moment and Marquez has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Rekve has managed to get both his arms back between Marquez's legs - danger averted.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mathias Rekve showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!

Marquez can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Rekve controls the pace.
Rekve sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Marquez's guard.
Marquez tries to get to full guard but Rekve has control of the leg.
Marquez is working hard here to advance position.
Rekve is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Mathias Rekve has got the better of the ground game so far.

Rekve decides to return to a standing position.

Rekve throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Rekve tries to buck Marquez off but Marquez is having none of it.
Marquez postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Mathias Rekve comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Rekve has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
