PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between James Smith (ranked 5713 p4p, 0 weight class) and Davion Motley (ranked 4431 p4p, 0 weight class). Motley has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Davion Motley!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Alan Glass and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith wants to clinch up but Motley keeps it at a distance.
Smith scores with a nice strike.

Motley drives through with a takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Motley prevents Smith from getting back to his feet.
Smith looking to hit a scissor sweep but Motley is one step ahead there.
Smith throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Motley won't allow Smith to get back to his feet.
Smith bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Motley's guard.

Smith wants to control from the top but Motley keeps moving.

Smith decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Motley, up you get!
Motley looks winded!

Smith shoots in and gets a takedown into Motley's guard.
Motley utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Smith trying to control but Motley is working from the bottom.
Smith throwing strikes from guard but Motley blocks nicely.
Motley looking to hit a scissor sweep but Smith is one step ahead there.

Smith advances position into side control!

Smith wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Motley, who protects the arm well.
Smith trying to control the position but Motley is working away.
Smith misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Motley wants to control but Smith postures up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith throws a strike aimed at the side of Motley's head but Motley avoids it well.
Motley is letting Smith control him for a moment.

Smith decides to stand back up. Smith steps back and let's Motley get back to his feet.
Smith scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Smith tries to clinch there but Motley circles away.
Smith shoots in but no luck this time.
Motley swats away the attempt to clinch by Smith.
Motley unleashes a big counter combination but Smith bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
Motley blocks a head kick by Smith.
Smith throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Motley's waist but Motley gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Smith off to one side.

Smith closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Smith trying to control from half guard but Motley is working away.
Smith is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Motley really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Smith. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Motley keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Motley wants to get back to full guard.
Smith tries to pass the half guard into mount. Motley knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Smith is looking to take a break and control but Motley is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Smith dominated that round.
That's time! Smith's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Smith stuffs the takedown attempt from Motley. Motley gets slowly back to his feet.
Smith closes the distance and clinches up with Motley, looking for a takedown. Smith pushes Motley against the cage but Motley circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Smith doesn't manage to clinch there - Motley circles away.
Smith tries a head kick but it misses.

Smith lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!

Motley slaps away a takedown attempt from Smith, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Motley is breathing heavily.
Motley stuffs the takedown attempt from Smith. Smith gets slowly back to his feet.

Motley looks for a takedown but Smith sprawls well.
Smith scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.

A left and a right from Smith both land. Nice combination.

and Motley counters with a shoot takedown. Smith fights it but they end up in guard.

Smith controls Motley momentarily but Motley frees himself.
Smith is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Smith is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Smith throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Motley blocking the ground and pound attempt from Smith.

Smith wants to stand up but Motley is controlling the position.
Motley tries to roll over but Smith keeps him under control.

Smith seems to be looking for submissions.
Smith trying to control from half guard but Motley is working away.
James Smith overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Smith is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Motley wants to improve his position but Smith is controlling well.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Motley moves into full guard.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Motley dives in and grabs Smith's left leg, looking for a takedown. Smith pushes down on Motley's head and hops out.
Smith misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
James Smith is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Smith shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Smith was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Smith decides to stand back up.
Smith pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Smith shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Motley pinned against the cage. Motley gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smith fails in his attempt to clinch.
Smith shoots in for a takedown but Motley shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Motley takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Smith fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Motley sprawls well initially but Smith persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Motley has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Smith is on him like a limpet, forcing Motley back against the cage.

Motley is defending well against a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for James Smith. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Smith drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Smith is trying to force a seperation but Motley has the dominant position.
Motley tries for a takedown. No joy.
Smith is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Motley is keeping busy.

Motley is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Smith can't fight it off and eventually Motley manages to take the fight to the floor. Smith looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Motley is fighting to break Smith's control of his arms but Smith is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Motley stops Smith from standing up.

Smith has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Motley is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

Motley wants the takedown. Smith is fighting it off but Motley persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Smith's guard against the cage.

Smith pushes Motley off and gets back to his feet.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Motley walks into a jab.
Smith fails with an attempt to clinch.
Smith scores to the head and body with a nice combination!

Smith misses with a body kick.
Motley is clearly looking to counter with head kicks.
Smith tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Smith is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Motley can do to turn this around?

Smith shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Motley manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Motley can't keep his opponent in guard - Smith advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Smith looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Smith has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Motley is squirming around, avoiding Smith's attempts to control the action.
Smith is really struggling to control Motley but he's trying to hold on to the position.
A nice elbow there by Smith.
Smith wants to control the pace but Motley is squirming around nicely.
Davion Motley has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
James Smith is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

James Smith showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Smith, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
