PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Billy Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Masterson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Billy Smith has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Billy Smith seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Masterson moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.

Smith closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Smith not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Masterson works his way to full guard. Good work.

Masterson escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smith gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Smith has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but Masterson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Smith postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Smith postures up in Masterson's guard and throws a big left but Masterson blocks it.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Smith tries for a takedown but Masterson sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Masterson connects with a good right hand that stumbles Smith. Smith circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Masterson stuffs the takedown.
Masterson scores with a crisp jab that stopped Smith in his tracks.
Smith throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Smith takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Smith shoots for a double leg takedown but Masterson sprawls well. He's pushed Smith's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Billy Smith. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Smith shoots in and drives through. Masterson sprawls well.
Smith is breathing heavily.
Smith gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Masterson.
Smith looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Smith.
Smith changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Masterson tries to avoid it but Smith manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Masterson to the ground. Masterson escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Masterson fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Smith looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Masterson tries to clinch up.

Masterson misses with a jab, cross combination.
Smith shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Masterson pinned against the cage. Masterson gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Masterson throws a right and a left that both miss.
Masterson throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Smith on the side of the head.
Smith fails with the takedown.
Masterson connects with a good right hand that stumbles Smith. Smith circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

It looks like Billy Smith has been cut.
Smith will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Masterson darts in and clinches Smith up against the cage.
Masterson scores with a nice hook to the head.
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Masterson creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Masterson's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Masterson lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.

Masterson is working Smith over against the cage.
Masterson has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
Smith wants a takedown but no success here.
Masterson throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Smiths head.

Masterson breaks from the clinch.
Masterson throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Smith shoots for a double leg takedown but Masterson sprawls well. He's pushed Smith's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Masterson tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Smith paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Smith takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Masterson prevents the takedown attempt.
Masterson is pressed up against the cage. Smith has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Masterson down to the mat. Masterson avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Smith seems to be squinting his left eye. Perhaps he got a poke in that previous exchange. Masterson shows no mercy and swarms him with a barage of strikes! Smith is backing up but Masterson catches him with a final right hook that drops him! Smith covers up and the referee steps in to end the fight! Masterson Jumps to his feet and flashes his guns to the crowd. Oh yeah, baby! How'd you like them apples?!
