Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between John Butt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Colton Cates (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Butt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Colton Cates!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Cecil Peabody and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A jab lands there for Cates.


It looks like John Butt has been cut.
Butt keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Butt misses with the combination.
Butt throws a head kick that misses.
Butt throws a right hand that Cates ducks under and follows up with a left that Cates also avoids with ease.
Butt misses with a two punch combination.
Cates closes the distance and clinches up with Butt, looking for a takedown. Cates pushes Butt against the cage but Butt circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Cates wants to clinch up but Butt keeps it at a distance.

Cates decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Cates is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Cates not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Cates missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Butt is looking to escape.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cates is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Butt is trying to stand.
Butt is breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cates winds up and cracks Butt with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Butt is trying to stand up here but Cates is controlling him well.
Cates works his foot free and advances to mount.
Butt is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
Cates throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
You get the feeling that Butt really doesn't like being in this position too much.

Cates is working for a guillotine from mount but Butt frees his head quite easily.
Butt's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.

Cates looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Butt is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Cates is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Butt is surviving well by controlling Cates's body position as best he can.
Butt wants to try and get back to his feet.

Butt defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Cates.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Butt really wants to buck Cates off and get back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cates punishing his opponent with strikes.

Cates is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Butt can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Butt wants to try and get back to his feet.
Cates looking to finish with strikes here!

Butt somehow manages to escape the mount and get back to his feet!
Butt misses with an attempted mid kick.
Cates fails with a takedown attempt.
John Butt has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Colton Cates.
Cates blocks a head kick by Butt.
Cates tries to clinch but Butt is having none of it.
John Butt is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Crunch! Butt slams his shin into Cates's torso.
Butt throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Cates cracks Butt with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Cates checks a leg kick.
Cates connects with a nice looking jab.
Cates takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Butt misses with a few strikes there.
Cates doesn't manage to clinch there - Butt circles away.
Cates moves in looking to clinch but Butt pushes him off.
Butt misses with a head kick.

Cates bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Butt wants to get back to his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Butt tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Colton Cates dominated that round.
The cut man is working on John Butt's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Cates looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Butt takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Cates fails with an attempt to clinch.

Butt throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

No joy there for Butt, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Butt throws a wild body kick that Cates sees coming a mile off.
Butt shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.
Butt takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Cates shoots in for a double leg but Butt sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Cates closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Butt is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

Butt bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!

That's one minute gone in the round.
A combination from Butt does no damage.
Butt tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Cates connects with a right hand. Butt shakes it off.
Butt pulls out of a head kick attempt.
A bone on bone clash there as Cates blocks the leg kick.
A left lands for Cates.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Cates, as that shot connected.
Cates scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
John Butt seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Nice body punch from Cates.
Butt wants to slow Cates down by chopping away at his legs.
Cates connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Butt momentarily.
Butt fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
A cross from Cates lands.
Butt swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Cates fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cates fails in his attempt to clinch.
Butt swinging wilding here.
Butt misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Butt throws a nice looking combination but Cates bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Cates looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Cates in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Butt tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Cates!
