PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Andrew Pierre (ranked 5509 p4p, 0 weight class) and Thorvald Espensen (ranked 6297 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Andrew Pierre!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Thorvald Espensen!
The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Steve Smith and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Espensen tries for a takedown but Pierre sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Pierre is looking to counter the offense by Espensen and move into the clinch.
Pierre doesn't manage to clinch there - Espensen circles away.
Pierre throws a lazy head kick

and Espensen counters with a crisp one two that drops Pierre! Espensen thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Pierre to his feet! Pierre is in big trouble!
Espensen avoids the head kick by Pierre.
Espensen wants to counter with a clinch but Pierre pushes him away.
Pierre tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Espensen fails with the takedown

and Pierre counters with a nice double leg into side control. Espensen won't be happy with that.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Pierre wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Espensen, who protects the arm well.
Espensen gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.

Espensen looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Espensen is pressing down on Pierre's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Espensen trying to keep a closed guard but Pierre is proving a slippery customer.
Espensen really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pierre. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Espensen might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Pierre haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Espensen tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Pierre looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Espensen is on top in guard.

Espensen missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Pierre looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Espensen wants to control from the top but Pierre keeps moving.
Pierre wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Pierre tries to land a sweep but no joy.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Espensen fails to land the takedown.
Andrew Pierre has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Thorvald Espensen.
Pierre tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Espensen manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Pierre tries a head kick but it misses.

Pierre gets to his feet - Espensen follows without any prompting.
Espensen changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Pierre tries to avoid it but Espensen manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Pierre to the ground. Pierre escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Pierre wants to clinch.
Espensen tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Pierre swivels and escapes.
Espensen lands with a kick to the temple. Pierre shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

Pierre scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Espensen gets back to half guard.
Pierre looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Espensen is trying to maintain the position but Pierre is very close to passing his half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Thorvald Espensen dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Espensen takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Espensen avoids the head kick by Pierre.
Pierre shoots in looking for a takedown but Espensen manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Pierre's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Andrew Pierre is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Pierre has a takedown stuffed.
Pierre misses with a takedown attempt - Espensen sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Pierre tries to clinch there but Espensen circles away.
Pierre tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Espensen paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Pierre fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Espensen manages to avoid it.
Espensen wants to counter with a clinch but Pierre pushes him away.
Pierre fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Pierre scores with a decent looking hook.

and Espensen holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Espensen looking for a sweep. Not yet Espensen, not yet.
Espensen seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Espensen has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Pierre can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Pierre stays in close to Espensen's body and controls the position.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Espensen is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Espensen has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Pierre is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Pierre dives in for a single leg takedown but Espensen sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Espensen raises up his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.

Pierre wants to get up but he can't break Espensen's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

A close second round but Thorvald Espensen will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's time! Pierre's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Espensen tries to bum rush Pierre with a series of wild strikes but Pierre uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Pierre throws a big counter combination but Espensen scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

Pierre closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Espensen quickly recovers to half guard.
Espensen works his way to full guard. Good work.
Espensen is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Pierre stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Espensen swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Espensen dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.
Pierre is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Pierre tries to break the clinch but Espensen is controlling the position.

Espensen wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Pierre manages to pass to side control.

Espensen is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Pierre defends well.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Andrew Pierre has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Thorvald Espensen is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Well Espensen has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
