PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Lord Viper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Patrick Pan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pan has chosen "I Believe I Can Fly" by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes as his entrance music. Patrick Pan will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lord Viper!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Patrick Pan!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pan tests Viper's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Viper looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
Pan throws a right hand that Viper ducks under and follows up with a left that Viper also avoids with ease.
Pan swats away the attempt to clinch by Viper.

Pan clinches up against the cage.
Pan has Viper pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Viper manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Viper tries to break the clinch but Pan is controlling the position.

Pan breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Pan clinches up with Viper and pushes him back against the cage.
Pan just leaning against Viper, taking a breather.

Pan jumps guard.
Pan is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Pan has his feet on Viper's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Pan drives through and clinches with Viper against the cage.
Pan prevents a body shot from Viper.

Pan escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Pan is looking to clinch.

Viper changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Pan looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Viper throwing strikes but Pan manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
Viper is looking for a sweep.
Pan wants to control but Viper is keeping him busy.
Pan wants to stand but Viper has his arm trapped.
Viper is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Pan off and has taken his back!
Viper lands a punch to the side of the head from the back.

Viper is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Pan knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Pan for a finish.
Pan controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position.

Pan is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Viper.
Viper doesn't have the hooks in and Pan manages to turn into his guard.

Pan tries to clinch up but Viper circles away and keeps his distance.
Viper throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Pan lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook.
No joy there for Pan, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Viper rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Pan moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Pan moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Viper is looking to clinch.

Pan clinches.
Viper wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Pan jumps into guard, dragging Viper to the mat.
Viper working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Viper has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Pan wriggles free and stands up.

Viper gets caught flat footed, as Pan shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Pan must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Viper wants to improve his position but instead Pan has moved into half guard.
Viper is trying to control but can't.

Viper makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Viper.
Viper trying to keep a closed guard but Pan is proving a slippery customer.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pan wants to stand but Viper is controlling his posture from full guard.
Viper bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Pan's guard.
Pan is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Viper trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pan throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Pan darts in trying to clinch

so Viper counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Viper trying to control but Pan is working from the bottom.
Pan wants to stand and escape but Viper is having none of it.
Viper working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Pan pulls Viper in to control the position.
Viper tries to free his leg and advance position but Pan is retaining full guard.

Pan pushes Viper off and gets back to his feet.

Pan moves into range and clinches up with Viper.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Pan breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Pan lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Pan.
Viper dodges the punch combination from Pan.
Pan wants to clinch up but Viper keeps it at a distance.
Some wild striking there from Pan.
Viper misses with a low kick.
Viper keeps the fight on the outside.
Pan tries to land a body kick
and Pan takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

and Viper counters with a nice double leg into side control. Pan won't be happy with that.

Viper fails to land a wild elbow strike.

Viper tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Pan manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Pan has decided to stand back up but his arm is trapped. Whilst he's worrying about his arm, Viper works to full guard.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Viper is on top in guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Viper accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Pan wants to stand up but Viper is controlling him.
Pan is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Viper wants to control from the top but Pan keeps moving.
Viper prevents Pan from getting back to his feet.

Pan kicks Viper off and gets to his feet.
Viper circles away from the clinch attempt.
Pan tries to clinch but Viper is having none of it.
Patrick Pan seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Pan closes the distance and clinches.
Viper wants to break the clinch but can't.

Pan breaks the clinch.
Pan throws a right and a left that Viper avoids nicely.
Viper walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Pan scoring well with a low kick there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lord Viper dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Pan tries to clinch but Viper moves out of range.
Pan fails to land with a series of punches.
Viper takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Pan bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Viper's head backwards.
Pan throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.

Pan wants to clinch up but Viper keeps it at a distance.
The fight stays on the outside here - Viper looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Viper misses with a low kick as Pan jumps back.

Pan lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Viper at a distance.
Viper swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Pan counters with a two punch combo.
Pan scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Pan scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

Pan closes the distance and clinches.
Pan tries for a takedown but Viper manages to get underhooks.

Pan breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Pan lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.

Viper throws a low kick, looking for Pan's leg but Pan calmly moves out of range.

Pan lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Pan.
Viper rushes in with a sloppy looking punch

and Pan counters by moving into the clinch.
Pan lands a nice knee to the body.
Pan gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Viper.

Viper throws a combination that misses
and Pan counters with a three punch combo that has Viper backing up. Viper nods at Pan to acknowledge the strikes.

Viper shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Viper won't let Pan get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Viper cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!

Pan bucks Viper off and manages to get back to his feet!
Viper moves out of range as Pan throws a body kick.
The fight stays on the outside here - Pan looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

and Viper counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Pan is not content to let Viper control the position.
Viper tries to pass the half guard into mount. Pan knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Viper wants to work for an arm triangle but Pan is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Patrick Pan comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Pan has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
