PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Stevie Ray (ranked 3087 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wayde West (ranked 3921 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying West's choice of entrance music: Sober. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Stevie Ray!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 30 - 27 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Wayde West!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, John Kavanagh and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ray throws out a token jab with nothing on it.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

West has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Ray uses from the top position.
Ray throws a big right hand that misses.
Ray trying to control the position from guard on top but West is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Ray gets to his feet - West follows without any prompting.
West shoots for a double leg takedown but Ray sprawls well. He's pushed West's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

and West counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by West.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
West blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Still in the clinch, Ray scores with a nice short uppercut.

West tightens his grip and picks Ray up, before dumping him to the ground. Ray manages to land in guard.
West wants to control from the top but Ray keeps moving.

Ray working for a triangle but West defends it easily.

Ray controls West momentarily but West frees himself.

Ray looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Ray has an active guard here but West has managed to pass into half guard.
Ray wants to get back to full guard but West has mounted him!
West looking to control but Ray is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Ray sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.

Ray is looking for a sweep. West is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Ray wants to control but West is keeping busy and won't allow it.
West seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Ray does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Ray gets back to full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Ray had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. West defends it easily.

West is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Ray is just riding it out for now. West eventually gives up the hold.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
West frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Ray tries to hold on but West pushes him away.
Ray wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by West.

West throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Ray because West loaded up on that one.
Ray is desperately trying to improve his position but West has a good base and remains in mount.
West lands a big shot there that rocks Ray but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
West avoids the attempt from Ray to control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Wayde West dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

West tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
The fight stays on the outside here - Ray looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Ray misses with a short punch on the inside.
Ray swings wildly with an uppercut but West uses good head movement to avoid it.
West jumps guard but Ray turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Ray fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Ray tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.

West ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. West no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

West isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Ray stacks West on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Ray!
West manages to work his way to half guard, despite Ray's best efforts.
West pushes Ray off looking to stand but Ray dives back in and keeps control.

Ray wants to work for an arm triangle but West is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
West misses with some strikes from the bottom.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Ray throws the left hand but West avoids the punch easily.
West darts in looking for a takedown but Ray gets double underhooks and turns West into the cage.
West throws an overhand right that lands on Ray's shoulder, as Ray tries to avoid the shot.
Stevie Ray is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
West's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Ray connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! West scrambles back to his feet.
Ray scores with a sloppy right hand. West should have avoided that one.
Wayde West is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Horrible takedown attempt by West or perhaps it was just good defense by Ray, which made it look bad.

Still in the clinch, Ray scores with a nice short uppercut.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

West gets control of Ray's arms and successfully pulls guard. West will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

West wants to stand but Ray is controlling the position.

Ray stands and steps away. West gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

West shoots in for a takedown but Ray shows good takedown defense.
West shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Ray pinned against the cage. Ray gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

West misses with a takedown attempt - Ray sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Ray fails in his attempt to clinch.
Ray tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but West paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Ray tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Ray has taken the fight to the clinch.
West blocks a couple of punches on the inside.

West is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Ray can't fight it off and eventually West manages to take the fight to the floor. Ray looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
