PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Paul Grant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ron Paul (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Paul Grant!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ron Paul!
The judges for this bout are , Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Paul will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Paul takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

Grant shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Paul's guard.
Grant landing some decent shots from guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Paul doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

Paul is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Paul wants to sweep but no luck.
Grant scoring with some ground and pound.
Grant wants to stand but Paul has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Paul looking for a guillotine here but Grant defends easily.
Paul preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Grant trying to control the position from guard on top but Paul is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Grant keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.

Grant changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Paul looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Paul is trying to control Grant's posture but Grant avoids it.

Paul tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Grant wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Paul manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Grant manages to get himself to full guard.

Grant looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Paul passes into side control.

Paul trying to control the position but Grant is working away.
Paul scores with a couple of short elbows.
Grant is trying to improve his position.
Paul cracks Grant with a big right hand but Grant just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

Paul looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Grant is looking to regain half guard here but Paul keeps moving and retains side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Grant is breathing heavily.
Paul works to advance to full mount. Grant defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.

Paul can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Grant is looking to escape.
Grant tries to hold on but Paul postures up.
Paul scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Grant?
Grant is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Paul has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Paul tries to control but Grant wriggling away.
Grant is working to get back to half guard.
Grant is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Grant tries to reverse the position but Paul maintains control.
Grant tries to lock up and control but Paul gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Paul landing strikes from the mount and Grant is in trouble!
Grant is squirming around, avoiding Paul's attempts to control the action.
Paul breaks from Grant's wrist control and lands an elbow.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ron Paul dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



Grant fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Paul sprawls well initially but Grant persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Paul keeping hold of Grant's head, controlling as best he can.

Paul looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Paul is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Grant missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Paul gets back to full guard.
Grant chips away with some ground and pound.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Paul has his foot on Grant's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Grant works his way back into a safe position though.

Paul is working an open guard so Grant takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Grant throws a body punch but Paul moves out of range.
Paul tries to close the distance and clinch but Grant swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Grant throws a half hearted mid kick.
Grant misses with a straight left.
Ron Paul is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Paul tries to move into range but Grant moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Grant lands a nice looking body shot.
Grant connects with a nice looking jab.
Paul tries for a takedown but Grant sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Paul has a takedown stuffed.
Grant ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Grant throws a good cross that connects.
Grant catches Paul with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Paul has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Paul there as he acknowledges the shot.
Paul takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

Grant decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Grant is tying to control. Paul wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Paul moves into full guard.

Paul throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Grant connects with a couple of short punches.
Grant has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Grant drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Grant jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Grant postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Grant throws a hook to the side of Paul's head but Paul sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Paul fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Paul Grant has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ron Paul.
Grant slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Paul throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Grant's waist but Grant gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Paul off to one side.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Grant dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Grant scores with a decent looking hook.

Grant darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Paul is pressing down on Grant's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Paul working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Grant.

Paul looking for a guillotine here but Grant defends easily.
Paul not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Grant thows a big elbow that misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Paul Grant dominated that second round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Paul takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Grant.
Paul manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Grant is looking for a kimura but Paul is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Grant to get the leverage.

The fighters are battling for position here. Paul manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Grant has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Paul is proving hard to escape from.
Paul bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Grant's guard.

Paul drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Paul jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Paul won't allow Grant to get back to his feet.

Grant can't keep his opponent in guard - Paul advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Grant is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Paul pulls his head out easily.

Paul is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Grant is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:49 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Ron Paul!
