PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Cornell Gibbs (ranked 5280 p4p, 0 weight class) and Leon Gorbechav (ranked 8018 p4p, 0 weight class). Leon Gorbechav told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Cornell Gibbs!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Leon Gorbechav!
The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Arvi Lind and Tarja Halkonen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gorbechav throws a leg kick that misses.
A counter left hand to the body from Gibbs misses its target.
Gorbechav looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!

Gibbs shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Gibbs looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Gorbechav with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Gibbs has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Gibbs slips a nice elbow through Gorbechav's hands, connecting with Gorbechav's forehead.
Gibbs seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gorbechav has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Rabid Reindeer Training. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.

Gibbs seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Gorbechav for as long as he can get away with.

Gibbs changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Gorbechav looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
You can see the frustration on Gorbechav's face as Gibbs controls the position.

What can Gorbechav do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!

Gibbs is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.
Gibbs has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Gibbs is throwing strikes from the back here. Oh that last one was to the back of the head. Gibbs gets a warning from the referee. He throws another strike to the back of the head straight away though and the referee has seen enough. He breaks up the two fighters and stands them back up. Gibbs gets a real talking to here and is lucky not to get a point deducted. Gibbs apologises and we restart here on the feet.

Gibbs looks up at the clock and then as Gorbechav takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Gibbs smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Cornell Gibbs overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Gibbs, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
