PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Frank Mir (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ned Kelly (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mir kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Master of puppets. Kelly has chosen Fistfull of Dollars as his entrance music. The key to victory for Frank Mir has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Frank Mir!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ned Kelly!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Hugh Johnson and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kelly shoots in and bounces Mir off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Kelly drops back, looking for a kneebar! Mir looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Mir looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Mir!
Kelly tries to buck Mir off but Mir is having none of it.
Kelly takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Kelly is looking for a sweep.

Mir decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Mir throws a right and a left that both miss.
Mir will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Mir throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Kelly.
A combination from Mir does no damage.

Kelly drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Kelly throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Kelly is looking to take a break and control but Mir is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Kelly is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Mir knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Mir tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Kelly is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Mir has escaped the position, nice work there.

Mir is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Kelly off and has taken his back!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Mir has the hooks in. Kelly is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
Mir trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.
Mir is trying to stick to Kelly's back but Kelly is turning into Mir. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Mir's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Kelly.
Mir wants to stand but Kelly is controlling the position.
Kelly sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Mir's guard.
Mir tries to get to full guard but Kelly has control of the leg.

Kelly wants to work for an arm triangle but Mir is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Kelly had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Mir is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Kelly Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Mir's back instead.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Kelly swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Mir is now in Kelly's guard. A big mistake from Kelly there, giving up the dominant position!

Mir is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Kelly can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Kelly is refusing to be controlled, as Mir sits in half guard.

Mir is looking to take a break and control but Kelly is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Ned Kelly has got the better of the ground game so far.
Kelly flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

That was a close second round but I would say that Frank Mir will probably get the nod.
That's time! Mir's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Kelly uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Mir.
Kelly shoots in for a takedown but Mir shows good takedown defense.
Mir tries to close the distance and clinch up but Kelly swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Kelly looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Kelly is working for a kimura but Mir is defending it quite comfortably.

Kelly is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Mir still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Mir has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!

Mir passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Kelly!
Mir will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Kelly drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Mir manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Kelly has Mir in his guard.

I think Kelly has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
