PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Lyndon Grant (ranked 23016 p4p, 0 weight class) and Derek DeCarlo (ranked 5422 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lyndon Grant!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Derek DeCarlo!
The judges for this bout are , Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
DeCarlo throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Grant swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.

DeCarlo feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Grant wants to stand and escape but DeCarlo is having none of it.
DeCarlo trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Grant could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
DeCarlo stops Grant from standing up.
DeCarlo controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

DeCarlo drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Grant manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now DeCarlo has Grant in his guard.

Grant is stalling in the full guard.

DeCarlo looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
DeCarlo working a defensive guard but Grant manages to pass into side control anyway.

Grant decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Grant gets a clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

DeCarlo breaks the clinch.
Grant circles away from the clinch attempt
and DeCarlo takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

DeCarlo shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Grant is trying to defend but DeCarlo finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Grant slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Grant kicks DeCarlo off and gets to his feet.

DeCarlo looking to score a takedown here. Grant is defending well but DeCarlo drives through and ends up in Grant's guard.
Grant looking for a sweep. Not yet Grant, not yet.
DeCarlo trying to control the position from guard on top but Grant is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Grant is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Grant keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Grant prevents DeCarlo from improving his position.

DeCarlo is trying to control but can't.
DeCarlo is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Grant content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Grant seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down DeCarlo for as long as he can get away with.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
DeCarlo wants to control but Grant is keeping busy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


DeCarlo is looking to clinch.

DeCarlo takes the fight into the clinch.

DeCarlo is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Grant can't fight it off and eventually DeCarlo manages to take the fight to the floor. Grant looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
DeCarlo stops Grant from standing up.
DeCarlo scoring with some ground and pound.
Lyndon Grant overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
DeCarlo won't allow Grant to get back to his feet.
Grant throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Grant bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in DeCarlo's guard.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if DeCarlo can do anything to dispel that myth.
DeCarlo is trying to keep Grant in close.
Grant would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
DeCarlo managing to control the position.

DeCarlo has his foot on Grant's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Grant works his way back into a safe position though.
Grant looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
DeCarlo not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Grant gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
DeCarlo passes Grant's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Grant has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but DeCarlo is on him like a limpet, forcing Grant back against the cage.
Grant jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as DeCarlo walks away with a smile on his face. Grant gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
The fight stays on the outside here - DeCarlo looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Grant gets a clinch.

Grant breaks from the clinch.
DeCarlo tries to clinch up.
Grant goes for a double leg but DeCarlo avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as DeCarlo continues to drive forward.

DeCarlo closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Grant is trying to stand.
Grant wants to get back to full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Grant kicks DeCarlo off and gets back to his feet.
Grant is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that DeCarlo can do to turn this around?

DeCarlo shoots in and bounces Grant off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Grant wriggles free and stands up.
DeCarlo is breathing heavily.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
DeCarlo tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Grant thinks about countering with a head kick.
Derek DeCarlo is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Grant tries to close the distance and clinch up but DeCarlo swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Grant dives in for a single leg takedown but DeCarlo sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Lyndon Grant. That's going to take a lot out of him.

DeCarlo has closed the distance and engaged Grant in a clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Lyndon Grant will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!



DeCarlo gets the takedown into side control.
Grant manages to get back to half guard.
DeCarlo is trying to control the action in half guard but Grant is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Grant has hold of DeCarlo's hands but DeCarlo slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
DeCarlo looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
DeCarlo seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
DeCarlo prevents Grant from standing back up.

DeCarlo is looking for a kimura but Grant is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for DeCarlo to get the leverage.
Grant is looking to escape.

DeCarlo scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Grant is trying to stand back up but DeCarlo is controlling him
DeCarlo is trying to control. Grant wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Grant looks like he's trying to stand up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

DeCarlo fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Grant to the ground. DeCarlo is now in Grant's guard.

Grant scrambles and gets back to his feet.
DeCarlo takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

DeCarlo scores with a takedown into Grant's guard.
Grant being controlled here, momentarily.

Grant manages to escape and get back to his feet.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Grant has DeCarlo up against the cage in a clinch.
Grant tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. DeCarlo just stands there and leans against the cage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

DeCarlo jumps into guard, dragging Grant to the mat.
Grant sitting in guard here, content to control.
Grant cracks DeCarlo with a solid left hand.
Grant wants to control from the top but DeCarlo keeps moving.
Grant controls from within his opponent's guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Grant chips away with some ground and pound.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Grant wants to get up but he can't break DeCarlo's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
DeCarlo falls off balance throwing a combination
and Grant counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Grant gets a clinch.
Derek DeCarlo has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Lyndon Grant is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
DeCarlo stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Lyndon Grant.
Well Grant has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
