PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Cian Cartwright (ranked 3867 p4p, 386 weight class) and Avila Alvarez (ranked 4743 p4p, 450 weight class). Cartwright comes into the arena with Engulfed by Darkness blaring out of the sound system. Alvarez has chosen Barbarian by The Darkness as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Avila Alvarez has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Cian Cartwright!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 28 - 2, fighting out of London, Avila Alvarez!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Tiny Johnson and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cartwright shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Alvarez as he avoids it easily.
Alvarez is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.
Cartwright keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
It looked like Cartwright wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Alvarez has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Cartwright.
A countering left hand to the body from Alvarez misses.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Alvarez enables Cartwright to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Alvarez manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Alvarez working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Cartwright doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Cartwright manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Alvarez has his foot on Cartwright's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Cartwright works his way back into a safe position though.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Cartwright accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cartwright stands up over Alvarez, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Alvarez had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Cartwright defends it easily.

Cartwright postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Cartwright missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Cartwright throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Alvarez works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Cartwright is working Alvarez over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Alvarez is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Cartwright defends well.

Cartwright lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Alvarez has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Cartwright has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Cartwright turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Alvarez tries to improve position but can't.
Cartwright is chipping away with strikes.

Alvarez tries to bench press Cartwright off him but Cartwright keeps the position.
Alvarez takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.

Cartwright tries for a kimura but Alvarez is defending well.

Alvarez tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Cartwright wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Cartwright scores with a couple of short elbows.


Alvarez is rocked!

Cartwright tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Cartwright has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Alvarez is still in real trouble! Can Cartwright finish him?

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A big shot lands for Cartwright! That's hurt Alvarez! Will he recover? Cartwright fires away with more strikes and the referee has to step in to stop the fight!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:20 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Cian Cartwright!
A relieved looking Cian Cartwright thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
Avila Alvarez was interviewed post fight and said 'I'm so pissed, man. I trained so hard for this camp too.'.
