PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Bill Pope (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sima Hui (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Sima Hui was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Sima Hui!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Hugh Johnson and Eliza Hachem.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pope takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Pope fails with the takedown.
Pope shoots in looking for a takedown. Hui tries to sprawl out of it but Pope keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Hui manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Pope gets a takedown into half guard.

Hui manages to get to full guard.

Hui has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Pope can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Pope drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Pope jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Hui throws his legs up looking for a submission but Pope uses it to pass to side control.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Hui gets back to half guard.
Pope passes to side control.
Hui is looking to regain half guard here but Pope keeps moving and retains side control.

Pope looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Pope is breathing heavily.
Hui tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Pope working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Pope thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Hui is looking for a sweep.

Pope is trying to get an arm triangle but Hui is defending well.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Pope uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Hui.
Hui throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Pope sees it coming and avoids it easily.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Hui keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bill Pope. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Pope shoots for a double leg takedown but Hui sprawls well. He's pushed Pope's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Hui throws a jab but it's blocked by Pope.

That was a close round but I would say that Bill Pope will probably get the nod.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hui lands a nice shot that snaps Pope's head back.

Pope shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Hui as he jumps to the side.

Hui thuds his right hand into Pope's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
A telegraphed right hand from Hui misses the target.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Pope slips a straight right by Hui.
Pope shoots for a takedown but Hui saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Bill Pope seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Nice defenses there by Pope.
Pope will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Hui sizes up Pope with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.

Pope shoots in but Hui avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Hui misses with an uppercut. Pope saw that one coming.

Pope gets a takedown into half guard.

Hui moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Pope is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Hui gets his way!

I really don't envy Pope right now.

Sima Hui showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Pope feints and as Hui raises his hands in defense, Pope changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Hui had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Pope is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Hui Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Pope's back instead.

Pope manages to reverse the position and now he's in Hui's guard. Nice work there by Pope.

Pope drops back looking for a leg! Hui is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Hui manages to kick Pope off! Pope jumps back into Hui's guard.

Pope stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hui swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Hui looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Pope is defending well. Hui quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Pope has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Hui celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
